Insight from my book Dope… WHEN INJURY MAKES CHEATING LOOK LIKE SURVIVAL Not every athlete who dopes is chasing a world record. Sometimes, the fear is much more immediate: losing a place on the team, a contract, an income – or the identity built around being an athlete. Dope explores research into why injury can change an athlete’s attitude towards performance-enhancing drugs. A baseball example is Andy Pettitte, the New York Yankees pitcher who admitted taking human growth hormone in an effort to recover faster from an elbow injury. The pressure can be immense. An injury threatens performance and earnings, while coaches, teammates or the wider sporting culture may make drug-assisted recovery seem like a shortcut back. That doesn’t make doping harmless or fair. But it helps explain how an athlete can move from seeing drugs as cheating to seeing them as a way to survive. Where should sport draw the line between treatment, recovery and enhancement? #Dope #SportsMedicine #InjuryRecovery #Baseball #Doping #CleanSport

Hey @sebcoe , I thought you said Kenya was making "good progress" in the fight against doping? The female marathon World Champion has just tested +ve for EPO. It cannot get worse than that. uk.news.yahoo.com/marathon-w…

One for those who like to believe the athlete's side of the story presented to a tribunal. 2 years for the doping, 4 years for faking a prescription. Keep in mind this is not a fringe athlete. This is a major marathon winner managed by a huge agency. independent.co.uk/sport/gene…

Copying @scarlets_rugby Ken Owens had a belter at No 8 & Sheehan is quicker. May be forced but interesting selection
Dan Sheehan at No 8! That's a curve ball.

Only one club of the 48 that have played in the Championship over the last decade has made an operating profit per @valuball Eight have made losses exceeding £200m in that period (2015/16 to 2024/25).

Stunning front cover of The Bluebird programme for Saturday's match with Birmingham City 💙 The edition is "dedicated to a generation lost – and the courage and determination of the Aberfan survivors and their families." A big well done to the club for this 👏

Vladimir Putin's government is taking every opportunity afforded by the @iocmedia decision to lift sanctions on Russia. The Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev is wasting no chance to make it look like he and the @Olympics are working together to restore Russia to the top table of international sport. In this special *public* edition of the #ZeusFiles, we examine how the IOC became 'useful idiots' for Russia duncanmackayveritas.substack…

When giving evidence, you showed neither shame nor contrition @vaughangething @MarkDrakeford You were responsible for ensuring Cymru had sufficient testing capacity & you failed. You failed over 13,000 people who died. Disgraceful
Anything to say @vaughangething @MarkDrakeford ? The @covidinquiryuk has totally rejected your claim that you acted on the “science”. You lied because you didn’t have the amount of tests that you needed. We all knew that. @DafyddTrystan @mabonapgwynfor @RhunapIorwerth @Heledd_Plaid @PeredurPlaid @DelythJewellAM

Absolutely nothing from @TUCCymru. It was worse in Wales 😡 We have a serious issue in Wales and you’re silent? Complicit even 😡 xitter.cf/covidbereaved/status/2…
This is damning. The Tories were unprepared for the pandemic, resulting in a lack of tests and PPE. Care home residents and staff were left unprotected.

The @covidinquiryuk says that @WelshGovernment was appalling in the pandemic. Care homes were an afterthought. Drakeford et al misled everyone including, the Senedd…..and what do @BBCWalesNews report? ⬇️🤦‍♀️ NOTHING. Diolch @ITVWales for reporting today.💛 NOTHING will change until @Plaid_Cymru find some courage and implement what they campaigned for, and what Scotland has, - a STATUTORY WALES COVID INQUIRY. @DafyddTrystan @mabonapgwynfor @RhunapIorwerth

What should be done with a foreign man who has been a 'hardened terrorist' since he was 16, was a member of the group which beheaded Briton Ken Bigley, and went on to join an Isis unit which conducted stonings, beheadings and mass executions? A normal country would deport or permanently jail him. If he was back in the Middle East, he'd be hanged. But in the UK, when this man, the Iraqi Mohammed Yaseen, arrived illegally (leaving Germany after serving a sentence for his Isis membership), we locked him up for six months and then set him free. Despite a British court being told that Yaseen poses 'a danger to the whole of the UK', he has applied for asylum and it is being reported that our own Foreign Office 'has raised concerns' that he could face 'mistreatment' if he's returned to Iraq. 'Mistreatment' because he's a terrorist, you understand. Yaseen's asylum claim will be funded by British taxpayers, as will all the legal aid he receives. ✍️ David Shipley Article | spectator.com/article/why-wa… | @ShipleyWrites

It's early days in the season with just 4 rounds of League/EPCR completed, here's how average attendances look by country, and then by club.

Tandy correct to exclude Faletau but some of his other exclusions are baffling. Stating the obvious, it’s likely to be a tough autumn for Wales

Yes
There were no fewer than ten tries scored from driving lineouts in tonight’s two URC matches. The close range maul is just so hard to stop when it’s set up well and marshalled effectively. Is it almost becoming too important in the modern day game?

Sublime handling skills, speed, precision and grand entertainment
The no-relegation, no-jeopardy English Prem continues its assault on the credibility of the try: 18 in all at The Gardens, one every 4 and a bit minutes. Grand entertainment or basketball froth? Whatever your view, scoring tries was never meant to be easy.
