Happy National Biomechanics Day! It’s been about a year since I last worked on my prosthetic arm! I made a relatively simple Matlab code that reads my muscle signals and processes it to motor commands. No time for a signal classifier = enthusiastic thumb movements😂🦾

What did people think of the #OptimusBot reveal at @Tesla AI day? Being interested in prosthetics and currently working at a company that also trains their robots with human demonstrations, I think this is phenomenal! The perfect blend of biomimicry and engineering 🤩

@BostonDynamics seems a bit further ahead in this process though with Spot and Atlas. I wonder what other companies that are investing in human-inspired robotics, such as @Dyson or @Google, will produce in the coming years 💭
Until we cross paths again ✌️ #NBD2022
In the nice things happen to nice people category, here's a nice story about Susan Sigward's and Stephanie Guzman's #NBD2022: pt.usc.edu/news/setting-futu… and a few photos. @LatinxBiomech @BlackBiomechs @IntWomenBiomech @biomechnewbies @AmSocBiomech @scsiggy @stephersss_24

Had a wonderful time at the Crenshaw YMCA for #NBD22 @BiomechanicsDay! I lead a session on Biomimicry and Innovation. The kids could not believe @BostonDynamics’s robots were real and all blew us away with their basketball hoop designs using @tinkercad! They’re truly the future!

My buddy David ( @dtow18 ) was having issues stabilizing a transducer for ultrasound measurements of the calf muscles, so I 3D printed him a custom “cage” to clear up the images! A second one is in the works currently for the Achilles’ tendon.

And it’s all over just like that. What an amazing 2 years it has been at USC! I have learned so much and can’t wait to see what’s next!
That’s a wrap! USC MS BKN Sport Sci ‘22 finished 💪🏼 . If this work is any indication- their futures are 😎! @44archer @jasoncherin @jasminstrong_ @sylvia_baeyens @ali_zeitelhack @alec_roig @Shannon_Rock_MS @IPetergacova @alexisemedrano

Fight on! @USCSportsSci @USCBKNPT @USC. Preparing for @BiomechanicsDay at Crenshaw YMCA. Can’t wait to showcase the arm to the next generation of innovators!

The movements are quite violent….will play with PWM settings on the servo to make them smoother :) Next up: add middle and pointer finger then EMG control!
What better way to learn about something than doing it yourself? Building a 3D printed prosthetic to feed my mechatronics tick. I adapted .stl parts from open source project @InMoov to fit with items around the house.

To control this, I’ve decided to jump right into sEMG. I tried DIY flex sensors but kept having trouble. Here is a code that I wrote in MATLAB which rotates the servo motor +/-90deg depending on which way I move my wrist. EMG signal is processed in code but not in visualizer.

Moving forward, I hope to use a more robust/detailed control algorithm for individual finger movements of different ranges depending on signal amplitude (currently a signal above a threshold computed from a calibration phase results in full “contraction”). More to come soon!

Why those old wooden indoor tracks–and a certain timber oval at Boston University–have the potential to elevate performance. Or rather, why super tracks were shifting times before super shoes! New essay up. Some history, some science, and lots of plywood. geoffreyburns.com/stream/it-…

Interesting! It’s my first day wearing both the Gen 2 @ouraring (thanks for the hand me down dad) and 3.0 @whoop (soon going to @sylvia_baeyens). Very different readiness/recovery scores with very similar HRV & avg HR. Main difference was deep sleep detection (+1 hr to oura)

Of course, @ouraring ura will need a few more days to calibrate to my body! I’m excited to grab my @whoop 4.0 waiting for me in LA and continue to compare both systems! 💪

Aldo became paralyzed as he was starting his academic career. In 2018 he walked across the commencement stage using an exoskeleton to receive his B.A. and this evening, he did it again with a master’s in biomedical engineering. @FIU_CEC @aldosinlimitess #realtriumphs #fiugrad
