Re-reading Rollo Romig's I Am on the Hit List: A Journalist’s Murder and the Rise of Autocracy in India, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2025. Without comment, from a July 2025 interview: "AM: Your book has different publishers inside and outside India—did you face any challenges with Indian publishers? RR: That was definitely a challenge. It was very hard to find an Indian publisher willing to take on the book. Penguin, for instance—I published the book with Penguin in the US, but Penguin India refused to publish it. I had fully expected Penguin India to be my publisher, and it was a challenge to find someone else. I can’t just assume that was due to concerns about the political content—maybe they didn’t like the book. Westland has been incredible. They continue to be the bravest major Indian publisher. I’m really impressed by their nerve, their smarts, and their savvy." thepolisproject.com/read/rol…

Gujarat cops (accompanied by Delhi police) came to journalist Ravi Nair’s home over a story he did with The Washington Post on Adani. An FIR has been lodged against Ravi, but not The Washington Post, based on a complaint by an Adani Group staffer. The police took away two of Ravi’s phones, his son’s laptop, and the laptop and iPad of a colleague who happened to be at home and is not an accused in the case. The cops had a judicial magistrate’s order. Refused to give hash value of the devices

#ALARMING🚨 Mr. Manan Mishra, HANDS OFF our students! How dare you pass such a grossly illegal order? Reveal your law degree to the world now because a lawyer can’t get the law this wrong! Students of NALSAR have displayed democratic dissent against a person they in their own wisdom thought was unfit to give them their hard-earned degrees. Who are you to intervene? Your accountability needs to be talked about too. Tell us why as the statutory regulator (BCI) responsible for supervising State Bar Councils you permitted elected bodies to continue BEYOND their terms until the Supreme Court intervened? Who were these people that were favoured as a result of this? Tell us now. And why and how have you been holding the post of Chairman since 2012 to now till 2030? Do tell us about your track record. Tell us why did you illegally intervene in the 2026 Chhattisgarh State Bar Council, as stated by the High Court there? Law students and advocates in Delhi and across the country will rise up in protest against you and in support of the students of NALSAR if you don’t WITHDRAW this disgusting notification IMMEDIATELY and apologise for your conduct. Your conduct and tenure as the BCI Chairman (while being BJP RS MP) needs to be accounted for. @Cockroachisback
#BREAKING BCI Chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra says that no student who graduated from NALSAR University of Law will be enrolled until further orders from Bar Council of India. BCI Chairman seeks report from NALSAR on students who mobilised a campaign to not invite CJI Surya Kant for convocation.

The ironies of history: In June 1947, the Muslim League and the Hindu Mahasabha, bitter ideological rivals, both supported the right of princely states to resist integration into India. And Travancore's bid for independence drew endorsements from both Jinnah and Savarkar. History is rarely as neat as our present-day political narratives make it seem.
