You have probably seen this painting online. A knight in armor stands against a wall while the woman who loves him traces his shadow onto the stone.
What she is doing in these last few minutes is, according to legend, the very reason art exists at allโฆ
The painting is The Shadow, made in 1909 by the English artist Edmund Blair Leighton. The knight stands in full chain mail, still, letting her work. Below the castle, a ship waits in the harbor. He is leaving for war, and they both know what that means: he may never come back.
And so, in the time they have left, she traces the outline of the shadow he casts on the wall. When he is gone, the shadow will vanish with him. But the line she draws will stay. It is the only thing she can keep, the shape of him held in place after the man himself has sailed away.
Leighton was retelling one of the oldest stories the Western world ever told about itself. The Roman writer Pliny the Elder recorded it in the first century: a young woman of Corinth whose lover was leaving traced the outline of his shadow, thrown by lamplight onto the wall, so she would still have his likeness when he was gone. According to that ancient account, this was the origin of drawing itself. Her father, a potter named Butades, is said to have pressed clay into the outline and fired it, and so, in the same story, sculpture was born too.
And this is what the old legend means: pictures were not invented to decorate or to impress, but out of the oldest ache there is, the need to hold on to someone we cannot keep. The Romans made wax likenesses of their dead so a face would never vanish from the world. To make an image of someone has always meant, in some way, to fight against losing them...
The woman in this painting is doing what every photo on your phone is secretly doing, what every portrait in every museum has always done, saying the same three things without words: stay, let me keep this, let me keep you. Nearly every image ever made is, at heart, an act of love against loss. And this painting shows the very moment that impulse was born, and the reason it has never stopped mattering sinceโฆ

Kolkata, West Bengal: On the India-EU Free Trade Agreement(FTA),
British Deputy High Commissioner for East and North-East India, Dr. Andrew Fleming says, "I think this is a really exciting moment for the UK-India relationship. I think for all business people, for all people offering different types of service, it will be quicker, easier and cheaper to be able to execute exports and other kinds of transactions between our country in so many areas. 99% of duty for exports from India to the UK are now going to be tariff-free and 90% of exports into India from the UK the same. So, it goes without saying, this opens many different new channels and I think it will help make products more competitive in the markets in both our countries..."
