yandex was the google of russia and now nebius is going to be the google of europe and their most consequential tech company; with no one even in contention for second place. the sad thing is, most of europe doesn’t even know it yet.
$NBIS Founder and CEO Arkady Volozh met with the Dutch Prime Minister and State Secretary to discuss Nebius’ global expansion and its role in supporting the AI ambitions of the Netherlands and Europe.

What can you build with an ESP32-S3 and a tiny round display? How about a blinking cyber eye? You can turn a small display into an animated eye that blinks like a tiny digital companion. You could put it on your desk, attach it to your backpack or even use it as the face of a DIY robot. A fun weekend project to explore ESP32-S3 programming, display control with animation. What would you build with an ESP32-S3 and a small display?

Terence Tao warns that the race to AGI is becoming toxic, and OpenAI’s massive paper dump wiped out junior research projects overnight. Some parts of his most recent interview: “They were willing to toss understanding to the side so that they could prove more theorems, get more press releases [...] and test their latest toys. These AIs are depleting our pool of questions and not replenishing them with anything new. only looked at about 10 of the 300 odd papers. I mean, so this is part of the thing. There's just so many to look at. [...] There's a whole bunch which are still incomprehensible. And no one's really gone through them, and one or two even have some errors and [were] retracted. So we don't have a clear picture of what's going on. And no one from OpenAI is helping us. As far as they're concerned, they're done. [...] We have this pile of stuff to go through which we didn't ask for, but we have it anyway. And there will be some good stuff in there and some rubbish, but we don't know what the percentages are yet.”

I'm loving these monthly updates from DeepSeek. Been that way 4 months in a row now. They set the base expectations for AI, especially in China. So, any LLM less performant than this is simply not worth using. Zai & Moonshot need to release more frequently or ppl will stop paying premium on them. You can't have 3 months release cycles where DS Flash is as good as your flagship model 1/3 of time. That's not a viable business model.
🚀 DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 is here! Stronger benchmark performance, faster task completion, and shorter outputs than the previous version—a Pareto improvement in performance and cost. Now live on our website, app, and API. 🛠️ Optimized for @DeepSeekHarness, Tencent CodeBuddy, WorkBuddy, and more. Upgrade to DeepSeek Harness v0.2.1-rc.1 or later for the best experience with the new model. 1/4

Let’s talk about founder-inventor contrarians: being one, like squirrels in the forest, we can find each other. I’m advising and investing in one now. @TechguruPaul is a contrarian. He sees things others don’t but he also doesn’t see the same artificial constraints that other others do. He’s relentless. I respect this about him tremendously.
I don't give many interviews these days. This was surprisingly fun. My friend @RezaSatchu interviewed me for @HarvardHBS and seeing some of these clips just makes me laugh. He really knows how to pull it out of me. This is so me. Allergic to conventional wisdom.

I truly believe conversational AI will drive the biggest educational leap of our generation. 1-on-1 tutoring is the gold standard for education, but it doesn't scale. AI can change that with truly active conversational learning. Annie and team set out to solve this with @gakkuai, and they've done a great job. Gakku is an AI mentoring app for K-12 students. Rather than doing the work for them, the voice chat coach guides students through 10 min essay writing "missions" that cover brainstorming, drafting, and revising. It actively trains kids to generate their own ideas, structure logical arguments, and articulate themselves clearly. If you have school-aged kids, I highly recommend checking it out: gakku.ai

a lot of investors ask me "what if china does this?" here's the secret: it doesn't matter. we will live in a multipolar world. they cannot under any circumstances be allowed to become the world's factory. it's that simple. we have no choice anymore, build or die.

Mark Zuckerberg says Alexandr Wang is the sharpest entrepreneur of his generation: "Alex is the guy. He's the fucking guy." "Alex and I had spent a bunch of time talking over the years, and maybe once every few months or something we'd talk. And I was always just very impressed by how he thought about things strategically." "I kind of had this view of like, all right, currently he's doing this very operational data business, but it always felt to me like he was the sharpest entrepreneur of his generation of the ones who I had a chance to meet." "I think maybe when we got started, a lot of people were like, okay, like how is this going to work? It's like the social media guy is working with the data guy. Like, are we going to build a frontier lab here or what?" "My really strong conviction is because I talked to all the leaders of all the labs, all the heads of research, all this stuff, and I was like, no, Alex is the guy. Like he's the fucking guy." "We need this kind of strategic clarity that he has around the different ways that we want to approach this, the kind of extreme focus on talent density, on the clarity of communicating the different vision which we kind of fashioned together over this period." "And a bunch of things that I think were kind of extreme but have basically worked, like having this very flat culture was something that you were kind of really obsessed with."

Even as overall attention/news volume on AI progress has increased, I still think the SV vs rest-of-world vibe gap is huge and maybe widening?
Jack Clark of Anthropic now thinks it's more likely we see full RSI become possible in 2027 than in 2028.

so here’s what I read while I was offline this weekend - re-read Essential Bukowski, always hits hard - Started reading Range by @DavidEpstein, he talks about how generalists do better in the long term then specialists (i’ll share more once i’m in deeper) what I love about Bukowski is how in a single poem, he shows you the darkness, the light, is optimistic about humanity and usually has you laughing at the absurdity of it all
Shabbat Shalom, enjoy the weekend!
