BOK has come up with “Universal Buying Platform” because it helps him better explain and sell his Apostra wares. “Unified media platform” seems like a weird term to me. We’re suddenly calling agentic orchestration adtech companies unified media platforms. But they’re agentic orchestration adtech companies! Calling yourself a “media platform” in this environment feels like business malpractice.

2/ "New" acronyms: unified media platforms and universal buying platforms. Both describe one stack combining tech, activation, inventory, data and media. Sounds familiar to me too: digiday.com/media-buying/wtf…

The problem is that privacy rules imposed by vertically integrated platform owners are not economically neutral. Apple and Google are not just neutral referees setting privacy standards. They also operate major commercial ecosystems that benefit when independent third parties lose access to signals or delivery paths that the platforms themselves can still reach through first-party relationships. Because Apple has an easy way to get its users to click on the Accept button, they are exploiting this to their own advantage. If regulators were doing their work, there would be a lot more scrutiny.

Imagine explaining this to a politician: “Apple is making it harder for advertising companies to track people and serve them ads. We need you to stop them.” 😅 That’s the political problem facing adtech. Whatever the competitive implications, Apple has an incredibly easy story to tell. They also picked a convenient enemy.

Instinct, a privately held AI agent akin to Grokbot or Muse, is suddenly popping up, and even Martha Stewart promoted them on stage today at #unboxed. The big Q is, will independent agents win or those of the digital dreadnoughts? Esp for shopping, consumers may want an agent without the bias.

"WE7 AI estimates that agentic advertising could produce 2–4x more carbon emissions per impression than traditional programmatic because of the additional AI computing involved."
