if you thought America has become a low trust society, you haven’t seen anything yet
i confirmed instinct was AGI by having it figure out how to get me out of jury duty

Anduril Co-Founder @traestephens thinks the US should implement mandatory civil service. "It's not a super contrarian idea, actually. There are a bunch of countries across the world that have some version of mandatory civil service." "In fact, we have aspects of this inside of our own society." "Things like jury duty or being subpoenaed for court or there are instances throughout the last 50 years where people were called into service to do things like road construction and maintenance..." "I think there's something really important about ensuring a sense of civil duty into our next generation." "I don't think that needs to be in a military service. It could just as easily be like going and working as a clerk in a county courthouse. There's all sorts of things that we can do to pull people in and have this feeling of shared progress that we all owe a responsibility towards."

we haven’t escaped technological stagnation until the most valuable company named “lightfield” is developing gravitational lensing for holograms or optical computers, not an ai crm

from going to duke basketball games 4 yrs ago to this … congrats @raymondhechen and @tomo team on the insane launch!
It's been 3 years since AI exploded, but nobody's life has improved outside of Silicon Valley. Tomo is for real humans, like my little brother Lucas and 10,000 other humans taking a chance on themselves every single day.

I think about Henry Kravis's ($12B) parting words to Ravi Gupta as he left to go to Instacart almost every day

1. Legalize housing (zoning reform / kill single-family-only zoning, parking minimums, FAR limits) Confidence: very high. Housing costs are the single biggest driver of US inequality, immobility, homelessness, declining fertility, and even a chunk of carbon emissions (sprawl). Make it legal to build apartments near jobs and rents fall. Why not done: localism. Homeowners are the median voter, vote in off-cycle elections, and treat their house as a leveraged retirement account. Federalism means DC can nudge but not mandate.

california is a paradise, which is the only reason it's not one; the ppl here haven't suffered enough. i propose we designate 30 days/yr for a geoengineered winter in which we learn to face the elements, shovel our neighbors' sidewalks, & rediscover the true meaning of Christmas

Imagine one day, this chart will be about housing. How me made it abundant and cheap, only a small fraction of your income goes towards it. This is the YIMBY mission.
75 years ago, 1 out of every 5 dollars a US family earned went to food. Today that's closer to 1 in 10. A slow, steady, easy-to-miss kind of progress.

in a world where stumbling upon a new school of thought is as easy as opening x / substack, the advantage lies not in the rigor of the one selected -- doing this well is straightforward -- but rather in the faithfulness of your devotion

🏛️@EffiGov is the Voice AI call center for local governments that answers resident questions, files service requests, and routes calls to the right department. Only 2% of cities can afford a traditional 311 center - and those that can are still overwhelmed. EffiGov fixes that.

concept from theoretical cs is that verification is usually fundamentally easier than search. thus everyday ppl have incredible discernment for kino vs. slop products, even if they themselves may not be able to make kino product

always resist the temptation to debase to the lcd, as this leads to feeling of ickiness and high customer churn, as opposed to building beautiful, well-thought out artifacts which uplift everyone (jobs)
