Ezra Klein explains it well, as usual: we have broken social mobility because we have gated who can afford to move to rich cities and climb up.
NIMBYism has destroyed the American Dream.

IFP @reedschwartzsf explains how 2 neighbors in San Francisco can own similar homes yet pay $200 vs $20,000 a year in property taxes under Prop 13:
"I think it is very plausible you could find a home paying $200 a year and a home paying $20,000 a year right next to each other."
"The way Prop 13 works is the value that the government assesses your house at is capped at the purchase price plus 1% per year, starting in 1975."
"If you bought in 1975, we had enormous inflation after that, and land prices have gone way up. If you bought for $10,000 and you're paying 1% in property taxes, it's just significantly less than if you bought for $2 million. Very plausible in San Francisco today."

California is squandering its potential and driving our foundational industries out.
We could write a glorious new chapter of prosperity instead. This is a choice. Choose wisely in November.
🚨 EXCLUSIVE: Paramount to leave California, according to the L.A. Mayor's office and the California Attorney General's office.

I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier. This has been a primary topic of discussions we've had at OpenAI in recent weeks.
Committing to having independent evaluators with employee-like access is a great idea, and we will do the same. We'll have more to share soon.
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so.
Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training.

Good to see transit in SF finally recovering.
But big percentage gains are easier when you’re starting from far behind, and SF’s pandemic recovery lags most other U.S. cities by years.
Let’s be clear-eyed: ridership still hasn’t recovered to pre-pandemic levels.
San Francisco should have quadruple the subway it does and its coffers already overflow with tax revenue to build it, but due to institutional incompetence and corruption, I fear humans set foot on Mars before a subway station in the Richmond.

And once again, the Sacramento status quo prevails over a common sense solution because too many of our elected leaders are more responsive to highly organized interests than California’s long-term needs. Thanks for fighting the good fight @BuffyWicks!

Californians could soon see some relief from their sky-high electric bills.
The reason? Data centers.
Thanks to data centers, PG&E has been able to offer rate cuts for the fourth time in two years.
Let's keep building!
My soundbar crashes AirPlay on volume change. Reported 2021. Never fixed.
I could patch it tonight if allowed. But @Apple's code is NDA'd, @Samsung's flash is signed.
AI could fix it overnight instead of waiting on updates that never come.

SF DEMOCRATS REJECT BILLIONAIRE TAX
“The San Francisco Democratic Party broke with the statewide party Wednesday, voting overwhelmingly to oppose a proposed tax on California billionaires — the latest sign of how the measure has divided Democrats across the state.
Of the 22 members present, 17 voted to oppose Proposition 40, a one-time tax of 5% on California’s billionaires.”

By closing Market Street to cars but not buses, San Francisco demonstrated the fundamental failing of American urbanism: thinking of urban areas as places to go THROUGH rather than as places to go TO.

It's because building anything at all is illegal. We have multiple canal systems built nearly a century ago that leak or can't run anywhere near capacity, because fixing them would (normatively) take two guys and a bulldozer but (descriptively) consume 10 years and billions of dollars of payoffs to a 100-turtle-deep layer of the usual suspects. We could easily desalinate another 10 million acre feet of water per year, but ... building anything at all is illegal.
Activists were able to block an apartment project in San Francisco's Mission District by raising an increasingly ridiculous set of objections.

Wow.
