My latest article on intelligence oversight in the U.K. out now in @IntelNatSecJnl focuses on the role of Ministers in providing accountability - ‘Familiar but not intimate’: Executive oversight of the UK intelligence and security agencies tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.…
I’ve been doing this for a while and I’m accustomed to updating lectures to take account of the political churn, but this still brings me up short. Six Prime Ministerial resignations in 10 years. TBH I don’t really know how to explain it.
Proud to talk to @ucu this week about the challenges facing loyal and hardworking at staff at Lincoln and across the sector. Staff are a university’s greatest asset not a drain on resources.
We don’t often hear about the staff who work diligently behind the scenes to support the work of the Intelligence and Security Committee. This is a rare and fitting tribute to Emma-Louise Avery who is retiring as Director and CEO of the ISC after more than 20 years service.

"The bronze sculpture, designed by Norwegian artist Håkon Anton Fagerås at his studio in Italy, depicts two figures carrying out surveillance and serves as a memorial to the intelligence cooperation between Norway and Britain during World War II".

Huge result from our members at the University of Lincoln.
85% have voted YES to strike action in the fight to save jobs, on a 60% turnout, with 88% also backing action short of a strike.
After four consecutive years of job losses, our members have sent a clear message: enough is enough.
Massive solidarity to everyone at Lincoln UCU.

The Independent Society of Musicians (ISM) has sent an open letter to Education Secretary Lucy Powell, calling on her to reverse the cut to funding for university creative and performing arts courses. artsprofessional.co.uk/news/…
We voted yes for action! @ucu members @unilincoln have voted overwhelmingly to support industrial action if faced with compulsory redundancies again this year: 85% support strike action; 88% support action short of strike. A huge mandate for action for a better future.
University of Lincoln has disposed of over 500 members of staff since 2024. As we start a new academic year management have refused to rule out further compulsory redundancies this year. @UCU at Lincoln is balloting its members about their willingness to take industrial action.

It was great to give a lecture at the @unilincoln today on how to predict the future
Decision science has given us the techniques to make our judgements explicit, transparent, and better reasoned - which done correctly massively increases our ability to predict what’s coming
Great interactive lecture today from @NwprtNarrative from @swift_centre about forecasting. Much food for thought for intelligence studies students (and scholars) about the process of forecasting, probability yardsticks and communicating with decision makers.

"I've calculated that if we eliminate staff and keep the same number of students enrolled, our financial problems will be solved. Why did we have all those people in the first place?!"

Cf. Jan van Eyck for the Burgundian court; after 1425 he was appointed valet de chambre to Philip the Good, having already served John III the Pitiless, Count of Holland and Hainaut (former Prince-Bishop of Liège), in that capacity from 1422.
I have a pile of reading for the new term but the last of the summer reading was Elizabeth Goldring’s gorgeous Holbein: Renaissance Master. It seems likely that Holbein, like many other court painters, also carried out intelligence missions for his powerful sponsors. #ArtofSpying

This is a post that sums up all of us in Universities we are starting term either in dispute, or with the threat of redundancy or with massive understaffing because of previous jobs cuts. Its very depressing. Because my experience of most academics is they do enjoy teaching students.
Odette Churchill (Sansom/Hallowes) by the artist Elizabeth Smily (née Wolf) from @I_W_M collection. Not sure the date on the top is correct as Sansom didn’t marry Peter Churchill until 1947, but a lovely portrait which I don’t think I’ve seen before #ArtofSpying
Elizabeth Smily was an accomplished artist who also painted a portrait of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. She later moved to Canada. She died in 2014 aged 96. I came across this report from a local Vancouver newspaper about the transfer of her painting of Odette to @I_W_M
