I moved back to my birthplace, Los Angeles, last year, and with it came a flood of memories and reflections. So much of who we are is defined by where and how we grew up. I tried to distill my thoughts into a memoir on "upward mobility" for @puddingviz.

i'm on the job market with a paper about political sorting in the labor market! it's perhaps harder to choose your coworkers than your friends or who you follow on twitter -- could the workplace be less segregated than other places where democrats and republicans tend not to mix?

Today is also my last day at the paper after nearly 13 years, and this will be my last column. I'm grateful that it happened to be one about saying goodbye.

I've been asked pretty much every week for the last four years whether we'd ever get anymore opioid shipment data other than from 2006-2014. I said it was unlikely to all who asked. Well, I was wrong. Come get your data from 2004-2019 now!!! washingtonpost.com/investiga…

I wrote an essay for @WIRED describing the need for a platform-independent transparency framework for our devices. I like to think of it as an Inspectability API. Summary in the thread below but you can also read the full thing here:

I've been trying to hold this take in but I just can't any more. The "east side" (silverlake etc) and the westside are not really that different! eastsiders stop trying to pretend like you wouldn't love all of the same stuff on the westside. You all like the same bougie things!
