Join us for a book talk exploring the complex political legacy of post-Ottoman #Iraq and #Syria following their independence in the 1940s and 1950s. While parliamentary rule, political parties, and civil society flourished, emergency laws and military intervention challenged democratic governance. The discussion will examine how both countries navigated questions of citizenship, national development, and the balance of political power, and how these struggles to establish genuine sovereignty continue to resonate today. ๐— ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜‚ ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐˜† is currently a senior researcher at CNRS-EHESS and a fellow researcher at the Wits History Workshop in Johannesburg. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Sponsored by: @abbasiprogram and @mideaststanford #AbbasiProgram #StanfordIslamicStudies #History

๐Ÿ‘‰ Sponsored by: Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies, @mideaststanford On August 2, 1914, the Ottoman and German Empires concluded an alliance, and on October 29, the Ottoman Empire entered World War I as part of the Central Powers. Soon thereafter, the Ottoman Sultan proclaimed jihad, while from December 1914, the German Foreign Office began promoting uprisings against the Allies. Throughout the war, Ottoman and German authorities produced a wide range of propaganda materials, including pamphlets, leaflets, and newspapers. This talk examines the largely overlooked Ottomanโ€“German propaganda campaign against the British Empire, exploring how it sought to mobilize Muslim opinion and challenge British imperial authority. ๐—–๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—จ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ป is an Assistant Professor of History at Dokuz Eylรผl University, Turkey, and currently a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Stanford University. #AbbasiProgram #StanfordIslamicStudies #Propaganda #WorldWarI #GermanOttomanAlliance
