There was once a 45 foot high imitation monastic round tower plonked in the middle of College Green. The wood and canvas temporary structure was built in 1932 to celebrate the Eucharistic Congress. Constructed by "Messrs. Watson of Killiney", it was erected on the former site of the statue of William of Orange. A subtle nod to the new supremacy of the Catholic church in the Republic of Ireland.
