Spiller also tells Citywire: “Saba has no question had a beneficial effect”. The activist’s presence in many trusts spurred boards into buying back shares & undertaking mergers they wouldn’t have done, saying eg it was Saba pressure that got BlackRock to merge #THRG with #BRSC.
Aberdeen’s payment for a 3yr standstill agreement with Saba for 7 of its investment trusts in August was “sordid”, says Peter Spiller of Capital Gearing #CGT, “because it avoids helping shareholders address a large discount”. citywire.com/investment-trus…

A desperately sorry tale of luxury beliefs overriding economic growth and prosperity in my home town of Hull. The most depressing line in the whole article: "the BBC understands workers across the sites will be kept on while Ineos tries to buy liquefied natural gas (LNG) directly from the US at lower prices" Sourcing that LNG will come at four times the carbon footprint of domestically-extracted gas. Well done everybody for an energy policy that makes us poorer, more polluting, and less resilient.👋👋 bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cw30…

This whole argument has been debunked by the brilliant @jburnmurdoch: the UK tax wedge is the largest in the world. Whilst Switzerland raises 2% of GDP in the form of taxes on wealth, the UK raises 3.7% of GDP. This 1% proposal would take the UK to more than twice the level of Switzerland. Fiscal arbitrage on assets is a thing.
2008 financial crash, covid, austerity, bills rising. It's everyday people who are paying, there's nothing left to give. A 1% wealth tax on the assets of the 'super-rich' would generate approximately £25 billion per year.

The UK is a strange place. Economically moribund and technologically dependant - so you'd think open weight AI you can download and adapt at amazingly cheap prices would be welcomed Anyway, here's a longtime government advisor suggesting you should need a license to use one

What an incredible statistic
The Tory Shadow Chancellor, @griffitha, has more private sector experience than the entire Labour Cabinet….combined. Wild.

Congratulations, you taxed the rich. Now half a million people have to pay more so you can feel good.

The Economist on the Martin Lewis Nation: "A measly 13% of the financial assets of British households are shares, the lowest in almost any large developed economy. In Ramseyan America the figure is 44%. No amount of scrimping and saving will compensate Britons for missing out on the profound benefits of long-term compound returns."

Sad to hear that Burnham's team is considering closing DSIT. The UK has a major competitive advantage in its scientific capacity. Turning that strength into economic power — DSIT's job — would be my idée fixe as Prime Minister. DeepMind is our biggest success story as a nation since the GFC. Imagine if we could create more companies like that and actually scale and list them in the UK. A $1 trillion company would dramatically turn around our GDP growth rate and allow us to fund everything the state wants to do today...

As Argentina was throwing in the towel at the end of the Falklands War, journalist Max Hastings, incredibly, walked into occupied Stanley ahead of the British forces. He speaks to the dejected Argentine soldiers and asks if they’re surrendering. Some of them glare at him but he meets no resistance. He then continues to the town pub, the Upland Goose, where he's met with cheers. The landlord says: “We never doubted for a moment that the British would come… Would you like a drink?” Via @dcsandbrook

Some of the best value in world markets might be sitting at home. UK shares trade at about a third less than the rest of the world. At Investor Summit 2026: fund manager Laura Foll (@law_debenture) on where UK equities are mispriced, and the Great British Bargains panel with Nick Britton (@AICPRESS), Jean Roche (@Schroders) and Richard Shepherd-Cross (Custodian Property Income REIT). We’re teaching people how to game the system instead of teaching them how to improve their prospects. People should be encouraged to build skills, invest, start businesses and increase their earning power - not this short-termism
Is it time to get a burner bank account to make serious money switching. EIGHT banks are paying £175+ to switchers right now & done right you can do it multiple times (ie make £1,000s). Full Q&A, how to, best-buys credit score impact and more in the pod (from 30mins in).

Working hard on making this @_investorsummit one to remember. Great to have the Shadow Chancellor opening the event for us.
We're delighted to welcome The Rt Hon Sir Mel Stride MP, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, as the opening keynote of Investor Summit 2026. As Shadow Chancellor, former Chair of the Treasury Select Committee, and former Work & Pensions Secretary, he brings a front-line view of the narrative shaping UK capital markets and investing. The Investor Summit is the one day built end-to-end around the investor: hear from the UK regulator, the London Stock Exchange, fund managers, investment platforms, issuers, the financial media, registrars, investor relations - together on a single day. With the biggest listing and market reforms in a generation now underway, 2026 is the year this conversation counts. Our theme - capital, confidence and investors, is a timely one: how UK companies raise capital, how we build trust in markets, and who gets to take part. investorsummit.co.uk

Saying quiet bit out loud: controlling the narrative now an avowed policy. But isn't it also a sign of weakness if only way legacy broadcasters like BBC can retain its audience is by government mandated compelled speech? This poisoned chalice will undermine not increase trust.
🚨NEW: A message from YouTube to its content creators has been verified It warns the UK government will force them to push legacy media outlets, like the BBC, ITV, and Channel 4, over independent commentators and journalists

Another all time greatest UK government consultation moment. They ask me my opinion on downranking my own videos in the youtube algorithm in favour of established networks like BBC and ITV... and they don't give me the option to disagree!!

More devolution is a great idea. Such is the surfeit of political talent in this country, we need to create more jobs to accommodate them all, can't let all that ability go to waste

The last sentence is the real meat and potatoes of this. What's being promoted as a 'social media ban for children', is really an ID check for every adult.
🚨 SUMMARY: The UK's social media ban for children from early 2027: - "User-to-user" apps where people create, share and interact with content (e.g. TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, X, Facebook) will be banned for under-16s - WhatsApp, Signal and YouTube Kids will be exempt - Under-16s will also be banned from livestreaming, messaging strangers on gaming apps like Discord and using disappearing messages - 16 and 17 year olds will face nightly social media curfews and limits on infinite scrolling with more details next month - AI "romantic companion" chatbots will be banned for under-18s - Adults can still access social media through age checks like facial recognition, digital IDs, passports and credit cards
