If AI will end the world, why are AI safetyists more interested in winning internet debates than saving it?
FULL PODCAST: Europeans still don’t get free speech
Welcome back to the pod! Pirate Wires reported on the State Department's fight against censorship abroad, while French President, Emmanuel Macron, denounced America's version of free speech. @metaversehell joins us to discuss free speech maximalism and how Europe's model of speech is seeping into America's view of speech. Also on today's episode, an AI doomer battle between Steven Pinker & Scott Alexander, @nicolewizman1 joins us to discuss how the state of California is in disarray, and we close the episode debating aliens and Fermi's Paradox (or the newly created.. Solana's Paradox.)

A new agreement between the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland will triple American defense bases on the icy territory.
The agreement features deal points we’ve never secured in Greenland before: we gain submarine access; accelerated permissions to build unmanned bases; and guardrails against Russian and Chinese influence over the region.
As @gb_rango explains, this new agreement isn’t important simply because of the benefits to American defense. More than that, it represents a return to the urgency and vigilance of post-WWII foreign policy. Europe and the U.S. are closing ranks to protect themselves against the threat of China and (secondarily) Russia, for whom the Arctic is a pivotal battleground: rare earths and nuclear missile pathways are key features of the region.

From attempting to hack government websites to commandeering a German Wiki, AI agents have had a wild (and sometimes illegal) summer.

I am republishing this piece from June 25, 2018, after learning from a colleague that a suffering friend found succor in its urging—one that I reemphasize—to wait just twenty-four hours when suicide seems the inevitable choice. Just twenty-four hours. This article appears as it did then. It is gratis. -M-

The State Department is launching an effort to eradicate censorship in America and abroad, enlisting companies like Palantir and Anduril to lend engineers to State for up to a year.
There, they’ll detect unlawful surveillance, strengthen child safety protections, enhance encryption, and ferret out attempts at government censorship everywhere.
You can think of it like DOGE for free speech.
The program was announced this summer in a private event at the historic Morgan Estate, attended by Pirate Wires, where State Dept Under Secretary Sarah Rogers (@UnderSecPD) talked censorship with Elon Musk.
Elon: “What we’ve got in America is something that should be treasured, which is the ability to speak your mind without the fear of reprisals or government action. [In] other parts of the world, they don’t have that.”
