Marc Andreessen on why he thinks Europe actually wants to be left behind on AI "Europe seems, I just take them at their word, determined to be left behind. They seem enthusiastic about being left behind. They seem to really badly want that" "25 years ago, if you did a list of the 50 biggest tech companies in the world, a pretty significant number were European, probably 15 of the top 50. Today you're basically down to Spotify. Which is great. I love Spotify" "I think they would be very happy if AI didn't happen inside the EU. I think they'd be very happy if social media didn't exist. I think they'd be quite happy to shut up the internet"

Announcing Signalful I listen to a lot of long interviews and podcasts with founders, investors and operators. Most of them have a dozen compelling insights, buried in 1-2 hours of conversation. I’m excited to announce a new service, Signalful, which distills the best ideas from these interviews into 5-minute executive summaries: numbered signals, each one tied to the timestamp in the video, so you can jump to the source. @signalfulnews is both a 3x-per-week newsletter that delivers these summaries directly to your inbox, and a website that archives all historical summaries. My team and I summarize 50+ podcasts every week, and each newsletter features one - the rest are on the website. Today's featured summary is Alexandr Wang on the @DavidSenra's @founderspodcast Here are three signals from the interview: 1. Meta built Muse, its personal agent, with fewer than 200 people in 7 months. Wang says the small group was on purpose, because a big organization produces a Frankenstein of many PMs' ideas. 2. The 100 Row Spreadsheet: The model team kept a spreadsheet of more than 100 behaviors a personal agent needs, built an eval for each, and trained against all of them. Many checkpoints were green on 80 rows and red on 20. That wasn't good enough to ship. 3. Wang says a modern consumer product has to work as a screenshot, because screenshots travel through group chats. There are 12 signals in the full summary, including his account of the Scale deal with Facebook. New Signalful newsletter editions go out Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Each one has one free summary and several more for paid members. My goal is for Signalful to massively increases signal-to-noise ratio for subscribers. Subscribe at the link below, and follow Signalful at @signalfulnews on X

If you want to understand why healthcare is so expensive, I'd start with a Supreme Court case about teeth whitening. Around 2003, spas and small kiosks in North Carolina were offering teeth whitening for a fraction of what dentists charge. So dentists complained to the state dental board. That dental board looks like this: - 6 of 8 are practicing dentists, elected by other dentists - 8 of the 10 who sat on the board during this period earned substantial fees from whitening The board sent 47+ cease-and-desist letters, warning non-dentists that they're committing a crime by practicing dentistry without a license. The board also sent letters to mall operators, advising them to expel whitening kiosks. All this worked! These kiosks shut down, prices stayed high, dentists stayed happy. Regulatory capture like this exists all over in healthcare. What makes this case notable is that someone actually sued the NC dental board, in a case that went all the way to the supreme court. In a 6-3 ruling, the SC ruled that if a board is run by those who participate in the market without proper supervision - that looks like a cartel, therefore, antitrust law applies. I have to believe there are so many other potential cases like this in healthcare, just waiting to be pressed on. I'd love to see more of this.

Met a German founder this week and asked him if all the stories one reads about the challenges of startups in Germany are exaggerated. "No, they're understated." Proceeded to describe spending a full day having a 90-page investment contract read to him (mandatory under German law; § 13 BeurkG) by a notary that then charged €30,000. That was for his first company. His second company, needless to say, was not incorporated in Germany.

Folks (guys and gals), don't be psyopped by this article. You don't have unlimited time. You need to be moving. Don't put off life. Don't look at Anne Hathaway getting pregnant at 43 and think "Oh, ok I'll be fine." It's a psyop. You'll have massive regret if you squander your youth with hedonism and selfish BS and then try to scramble to have a real life later. Don't be deceived by lies.

BREAKING: The EU just mandated that every new car registered in Europe starting today must have a camera filming the driver’s face. It’s called Advanced Driver Distraction Warning (ADDW) under their General Safety Regulation. Tracks your gaze, head movements and attention from 20 km/h and up. Stricter the faster you go. They say it’s not recording for the authorities… yet. Engineers warned this is the perfect hardware for future surveillance once the cameras and software are already in every vehicle. Why do you think they want all those big AI data centres? Live and let live? Not in Europe. People are literally cheering for technology that will eliminate their jobs and give government absolute control over their lives. Why?

Will Guidara gave me his rules for criticizing someone on your team: - in private (praise in public, criticize in private) - the behavior, not the person - consistently, so people know what right looks like - never with sarcasm, never with emotion - and praise more than you criticize His line: if praise is affirmation, criticism is investment.

A month ago, I published a 13,000-word essay on IVF and egg freezing. The core argument is that the American fertility funnel pushes women toward far higher drug doses than the rest of the world, defaulting to the most aggressive protocol for nearly every woman — usually without telling her that gentler options exist and get comparable results. This thread is the short version and should take 5 minutes, compared to the essay's 1 hour. It also clears up the mischaracterisations I keep hearing — some of them honest, given how long the piece is, and some from people with a vested interest in my being wrong. The straw man goes like this: Riva said egg freezing and IVF are bad, exaggerated how many days American women take stims, and then told them to copy Japan, where IVF outcomes are notoriously worse. Don't bother reading it! Egg freezing and IVF are incredible technologies. What I'm critical of is the methods and the advice young women are given. Three approaches exist, but the US system defaults to the most aggressive one for nearly every woman:

A dear friend of mine, and someone many of you know, was recently diagnosed stage 4 lung cancer. He is being seen at Sloan, which is great. I've been reading about new treatments, particularly with AI. I know nothing about this stuff. But I desperately want to help a buddy and know I have a bunch of smart, powerful people in my audience. If there's anyone out there that thinks they can point him into a helpful directly, please email me: [email protected].
