Nearly half of Kenya’s public debt is domestic borrowing. Yet ordinary Kenyans are entitled to ask: where is the corresponding development, and what tangible value are citizens receiving for the interest they are paying? Domestic borrowing is not inherently fraudulent. The real scandal is when billions are borrowed year after year, interest payments consume public revenue, private businesses struggle to access affordable credit, and citizens are left wondering what their sacrifice has achieved. Government bonds are not free money. They are obligations backed by taxpayers. Every shilling borrowed must be accounted for, every project must demonstrate value, and every expenditure must withstand public scrutiny. You cannot mortgage the country’s future without showing Kenyans what they are getting in return. We need a transparent audit of domestic borrowing, full disclosure of how the proceeds are used, and accountability for waste and misuse. Kenya must stop treating borrowing as a substitute for economic transformation. The question is simple: if Kenyans must repay the debt, why are they not seeing commensurate returns?
