Mike Coniglio discusses NSSL LIDAR deployment in the LIFT project to help understand near-tornado & tornadic flow better.
108 deployments across 52 supercells & 17 tornadoes. Single PPIs every 30 s. Dust is a major problem. Found often near-SFC vorticity worms. Huge vertical shear in lowest 20 m AGL. Sampled 3 tornadoes I saw (Sudan TX, Arnett OK, St Libory NE). [That’s always cool to conceptualize eyewitnesses glow w/observational research results.]. RFGF vorticity rolls up, tornadogenesis appears to happen ahead of the SVC. #sls32

This will become a much different scene as 70,000 cubic feet per second of water moves in later this afternoon or evening. Lake Travis will rise quickly. Property/dock owners need to plan ahead
From the Pedernales River Bridge on 71. This has been dry as a bone recently, and still hasn't received the upstream flooding in Blanco and Gillespie County. Catastrophic flooding today across the western Texas Hill Country, be safe friends. #txwx #ewxspotter

The aurora isn't a steady process - there are ebbs and flows (space weather aficionados call these "substorms"). The most impressive views for us will come during these substorms, which can last for a few minutes to an hour.
