He slept beside homeless people to understand poverty. Years later, his work helped shape India’s fight against hunger.
Belgian-born economist Jean Drèze didn’t just study poverty through statistics and research papers.
In 1980s London, he lived alongside homeless people, cooked meals with squatters in an abandoned hospital and helped organise a movement to open empty buildings to those with nowhere to live.
Born in 1959, he moved to India in 1979 and spent years studying rural life, listening to villagers and understanding the realities behind hunger and inequality.
In 2002, he became an Indian citizen, making India the home of both his life and his work.
Drèze went on to play a key role in the Right to Food Campaign and helped shape landmark social policies, including MGNREGA, which guarantees rural households paid work, and the National Food Security Act.
His research also explored child nutrition, education and healthcare.
For Drèze, economics has always been about more than numbers. It is about understanding people’s struggles and helping build systems that protect their right to live with dignity.

Gyanesh will have to resign. This govt cannot control this. This is way, way bigger than what unfolded in July. This is a tsunami.

Try entering #Delhi today even if you are going home & you will get a taste of what authorities - without check & balances - could look like.
I just did. On way home I was asked where & why I am going.
Delhi-NCR is getting taste of what many other places in India face daily.

this government’s priorities are genuinely fucking disgusting. just two weeks ago, hundreds of lady shri ram college students were on the streets protesting for basic rights, demanding functional CCTV cameras, better lighting, pink booths, security especially around gate 7 & the back gate. women were on the streets demanding basic safety and the government headed by rekha gupta couldn’t show the same urgency.
but just a day before the Jantar Mantar protest on 10th october, suddenly there’s an order to install 1,000+ cameras around the protest site. THOUSANDS. yeah they successfully installed more than thousand cameras in just 2 days. apparently, the government knows how to mobilise resources overnight when it comes to keeping an eye on citizens who raise their voices, but becomes deaf, dumb and paralysed when young women from one of the finest institution of this country demands protection in the nation’s capital.
they have the machinery to watch you, the manpower to stop you and the resources to control & suppress you. what they apparently lack is the urgency to protect you.
the most fucking shameful part? delhi has a woman chief minister, yet women’s safety seems to be the last thing on this government’s priority list. when women demand protection, the system goes silent. when citizens prepare to protest, suddenly the cameras, barricades and police are ready. if a woman becoming chief minister doesn’t make women’s safety a priority in nation’s capital, then what the fuck was the point of having one? and some of you spineless clowns still have the fucking audacity to defend this government & their spineless actions?!!

This is a common tactic that the Telangana police have been employing over the decade. They used to detain people from villages to not come to Hyderabad whenever a protest was called. They even arrest auto driver, local leaders who are trying to bring party cadre for the protest.
AISF students from Pune, travelling to Delhi for the Jantar Mantar protest, have been detained by Madhya Pradesh Police at Itarsi.
The detention took place moments ago. We are currently trying to ascertain where the students are being taken and the grounds for their detention.
