Credit to @AndyBeshearKY for signing in Kentucky's Nuclear Reactor Site Readiness Pilot Program in April this year. The bill authorizes state support for up to $25 million or a third of NRC site licensing costs.

Weekly reminder I will save you all.
In this episode of First Principles, we'll learn about asteroids, the telescopes that find them, and the satellites that protect us against them. ✧ In 2004, astronomers discovered a new, 60-million-ton asteroid hurtling towards Earth. They scrambled the world's best telescopes, traced its path in the sky as accurately as they could, and concluded that the asteroid, 99942 Apophis, had a 2.7% chance of causing "regional devastation" here on Earth. Today, that estimate has been revised down. We now know that Apophis will make its closest pass on Friday, April 13th, 2029, missing Earth but only just barely: the asteroid will pass closer than satellites in geostationary orbit, and will be visible to the naked eye. Exactly how we know that — and what we would do if we determined an asteroid really *was* heading our way — is the focus of today's episode. In this episode, we'll visit the telescope that discovered Pluto, one of the biggest optical reflecting telescopes in the world, and the factory floor of @AstroForge, a company building satellites for asteroid mining and planetary defense. Special thanks to @MattGialich, whose connections to Lowell Observatory made this episode possible — and whose meteorite collection is the envy of space nerds everywhere. ✧ 00:00 — Asteroids & Apophis 1:08 — Pluto Discovery Telescope Overview 1:57 — Pluto Discovery, Tracking 2:34 — Pluto Discovery, Optics 3:38 — Pluto Discovery, Sensor 5:06 — Lowell Discovery Telescope Overview 5:24 — Lowell Discovery, Tracking 7:08 — Lowell Discovery, Optics 8:07 — Lowell Discovery, Sensor 9:35 — Driving the Lowell Discovery Telescope 11:26 — The @AstroForge Satellite Factory 13:46 — How AstroForge Deflects Asteroids 14:49 — AstroForge 1.5 kW Laser Demo

$eose I have often wondered how long from order to delivery. @SpearfishingCap can you tell if that is 90 days from order to departing the JNTG factory, or 90 days from order to arrival at the Pittsburgh factory. Considering you have to allow 45 days just for transportation from factory to factory, my assumption would be it is 90 days from order to departing the JNTG factory. Add 45 days for transportation and it is 4 1/2 months from order to arrival. Thus a very meaningful lag.
Replying to @SpearfishingCap
JNTG's Master Supply Agreement with Eos provides a rolling 6-month forecast. Eos issues binding written POs 90 days before requested delivery. If JNTG delays delivery by more than 1 month, JNTG faces a liquidated damages penalty of 0.3% of the delivery amount per day (10% cap).

JPM’s chart puts global AI compute demand at ~450 GW in 2030 and ~530 GW in 2031. Translating that into capital and revenue shows aggressive these assumptions seem to be. At an illustrative $50B per fully equipped GW (low-end by the way as costs are moving up), supplying 530 GW represents ~$26.5T of infrastructure, equivalent to 21% of one year’s global GDP or 82% of US GDP [I know apples to oranges as global figure vs. US but for scale comparison. At the $20B of annual revenue per GW to make acceptable returns on the capex, that fleet would need to generate ~$10.6T annually. That’s 8.4% of global GDP or roughly one-third of US GDP, using 2026 estimates for scale. JPM itself forecasts only ~250 GW of supply in 2031, so it clearly expects much of that demand to go unmet but still hard to wrap your head around 'unconstrained demand' at these levels. I struggle with presenting the remainder as an economic opportunity without showing what customers would pay for it. We can be short compute today while the revenue needed to justify these longer-term demand forecasts remains extraordinarily ambitious.
J.P. Morgan is forecasting a ~300GW shortfall in global AI compute by 2031E. $NVDA $AMD $GOOGL $MSFT $META $AVGO $AMZN

VLCC supply is no longer as constrained. The VLCC/ULCC orderbook has reached ~32.5% of the existing fleet, while 31 vessels have been delivered in 2026 so far, up from just 1 in 2024 and 6 in 2025. That’s a major shift in the crude tanker supply outlook.

The expedition led by Cyrus against his brother failed. The Greek mercenaries are trapped in Asia, their generals dead. As Xenophon lay to rest with the army at night, he was awoken by a dream that his father's house was struck by lightning. Jolted, he asked himself, "Why do I lay here?" Doing nothing, and took it upon himself to call a council with whatever leaders were left or made.

And everyone keeps saying someone else should hold the backstop risk
There's hope that the data center boom can help jumpstart nuclear, and it has with restarts and uprates of existing plants. The challenge for new builds, both for current and next-gen tech, is that no one can promise what it costs, when it comes online, or even that it ever will.
