Looking for a job at a top AI company? Catchmaker.com is your new starting point.
We just soft-launched in public beta. Feedback welcome!
Many people try various ways to look smart, without realizing that the opposite is a critical part of high achievement: "I could try out lots of really "dumb" ideas very fast"
"Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see."
A founder and his son had an AI startup that helped the family earn a living.
One day, OpenAI released ChatGPT and tech twitter cried out “Your startup is fucked, what terrible luck!”.
The founder replied “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”
A few months later the startup doubled in MRR because ChatGPT educated the market on AI and it's use cases.
Twitter shouted out “Your hard work has paid off! What an amazing MRR graph!” and the founder replied “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”
Later that year, a copycat saw all of the founder's success and decided to clone their AI startup.
Twitter cried out “You have a copycat doing better than you now, what terrible luck!”. The founder replied, “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”
The copycat couldn't keep up with the sudden traffic and abandoned their project, which lead to many of their users coming to the original startup instead.
Twitter exclaimed “You've outlasted the competition and taken their users, what tremendous luck!”, to which the founder replied “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”

I tweaked one of my favorite proverbs and based it on our startup story
I decided to write this because nowadays, I see all this fear-mongering of “holy fuck ChatGPT just killed a million startups because of this plugin or that feature or because of this announcement on dev day”
These posts are balanced by the headstrong founders who post the opposite of “well actually these changes are excellent for our business and now we are going to be a trillion-dollar company instead of a billion-dollar company!!!”
Even if constant anxiety and/or forced optimism about the AI landscape was the optimal way to run a business, it seems like such a draining way to live
Is our philosophy of marching forward and being generally unaffected by the AI landscape a better way to run a startup?
Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.

Exciting, Sutton joining Carmack. I think they are right that AGI is going to be a simple set of ideas, likely ones already in the world today. I've had Sutton's The Bitter Lesson open as a tab for a year. Worth reading: incompleteideas.net/IncIdeas…

Interested in different ways that LLMs are used? Here's a relevant thread on @character_ai - some skepticism but "obviously getting something right".
I've been thinking about AI products recently, and while the major labs (OpenAI, GDM, Anthropic) are competing on productivity assistants, character is clearly going in a different direction.
Thinking from first principles, human beings have a few fundamental desires: not being sick, staying out of jail, not being hungry, not being lonely, etc. Very lucrative industries have developed around these desires---medicine, law, restaurants, p*rn, etc.
But there is currently no big industry around emotional connection. And it seems likely that society is moving towards such an industry being compelling, given increased rates of loneliness, people getting married later, etc.
Character seems to be breaking through into this, with reported average session times of 2+ hours, and reaching the top of the app store, on par with netflix. I'm really curious about two things:
1. Who are the users of character.ai? I don't personally know anyone who uses it (but obviously the people I know personally is a very biased slice of the world).
2. What are the use cases of character.ai? An obvious first guess is erotic content, but I'm not sure that's true; I tried to get it to generate erotic content but it gave similar refusals to the other chatbots. I kinda get the anime / fanfic use cases, but I also feel like that doesn't explain all of it.
Character is obviously getting something right---they have one of the strongest engineering teams around and massive product usage. It doesn't feel impossible that in a few decades, emotional connection will be one of the top 100 industries in the world. Perhaps the rest of us are missing something. Would love to hear people's takes.
Great thread. It's one of many gems waiting to be rediscovered by people who dig into times gone by.
