I fought to expand @ShotSpotter in Minneapolis and took heat for it. No tool stops shootings. But it gets help to someone bleeding out faster, often a minute+ before 911. It cost about two cops a year. If it saves just one life, how could it not be worth it?
“So this is real. This is real to me.”
A close friend of SoundThinking CEO Ralph Clark was shot in Oakland.
A ShotSpotter alert brought officers to the scene before the first 911 call came in. They rushed him to Highland Hospital, saving his life.

First in line and got it in before sunrise. Whatever your schedule, make the time to get yours in too.

License plate readers can stop a threat. They can also be abused. The answer is clear rules: verify alerts, limit data retention, and require independent oversight. My new Hill op-ed: oharaleadership.substack.com…

Kudos to PERF for highlighting and advocating for this essential technology. The controversies surrounding this issue are largely the result of inadequate policies, accountability, and training. You can expect what you inspect. Clearly there were not enough inspections as well as a failure on the part of the police and the camera companies to early on educate and involve the public to gain their support.

Leaders like @SheriffEd_HCSO and @SeanTeareHCDAO, along with their teams, understand the importance of fulfilling their statutory duties.
Americans, especially Texans, have long been wary of federal and state overreach and fiercely protective of local control.
No badge, agency, or level of government should be above the law. Accountability is not optional, and jurisdiction should never be mistaken for immunity.
Proud of my former colleagues for standing up for the rule of law and the people they serve.

Police can embrace new technology. They cannot outsource responsibility for governance.
My latest for @routefifty on what license plate readers can teach us about AI—and why verification must come before enforcement.

In recognition of the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the World Trade Center Memorial Fund have installed a new memorial at the World Trade Center campus.
The Port Authority Employee Memorial honors the nearly 90 agency employees who died on 9/11 and the February 1993 World Trade Center bombing, as well as those who have been sickened or died from illnesses as a result of working on post-9/11 recovery efforts.
Located at Liberty Park, the memorial provides a quiet space for remembrance near the agency’s headquarters at 4 World Trade Center. Read the full press release here: ow.ly/vslZ50ZGHfO
"Beams and struts slammed into one another. As each floor failed, the falling mass increased, picking up velocity. About 500,000 tons of concrete and steel sped to the earth, reaching an estimated 124 mph.
The @FDNY lost 343 men on 9/11; 65 of their sons and daughters now serve."

Our first-ever Cops and Kids Back-to-School Gaming Event is underway, bringing nearly 400 young people and PPD officers together for an afternoon of games, activities, school supplies and plenty of fun as we get ready for a new school year!
Grateful everyone aboard arrived safely. The @united flight attendants showed extraordinary patience and professionalism through an extended effort to de-escalate the situation, and the @BergenCountySo acted quickly when intervention became necessary.
