In this edition of #TheContext by the Indian Venture and Alternate Capital Association (@IndianVCA), @skg69, Managing Director, @YourNestVC, explains why continuation vehicles (CVs) are emerging as a game-changer for India’s maturing venture ecosystem. With traditional exits like initial public offerings (IPOs) and mergers and acquisitions (M&As) still slow, CVs offer investors a way to extend ownership of high-performing assets while also providing liquidity. Globally, general partner (GP)-led secondary transactions reached $84 billion in 2024, with CVs driving nearly 80% of that volume. And India is fast catching on, accounting for one in five CVs completed since 2020. By enabling fair market pricing, preventing sub-optimal exits, and offering clear liquidity paths for limited partners (LPs), CVs are strengthening trust and accountability across the ecosystem. More importantly, they are opening the door to flexible long-term structures like evergreen funds—an important next step in the evolution of Indian venture capital. But the only aspect out there is that, there will be many LPs who may like to have liquidity right away. A few of them believe in those assets, and they say, okay, take me to the different distribution period without having a CD, but you need to give some exit to some of the entities who may not like to save for other types and eight years in the same party.”
