I was wrong. There is a magical quality required to be a writer: courage. To create, in the face of derision and ridicule, and sometimes even hate. Salman Rushdie continued to create where many of us would falter; was defiant, in the face of barbarism.
Sometimes I wonder if the rather unmagical qualities of dogged persistence (in the face of a industry designed to crush dreams), and iron discipline (consistently putting words on paper, despite the odds) are the two most important traits for a writer.

Reviews matter because word-of-mouth matters, especially for little-known authors, like me. But sometimes reviews matter because they let you know your words really meant something to someone you’ve never met. goodreads.com/review/show?id…

New! —> The 2021-2022 Key Book Publishing Paths chart. To be honest, little has changed since last year, but people like reassurance it’s up to date. It is. Soon, I expect to change “Big Five” to “Big Four” if PRH’s acquisition of S&S is approved. janefriedman.com/key-book-pu…
