“Pharmacist here. It’s the DEA.” This entire conversation about pharmacists started because of a video I made. I made the video because of the number of vulgar and unprofessional videos being posted by PharmDs openly boasting about refusing to fill legitimate opioid prescriptions for chronic pain patients I understand pharmacists are under tremendous pressure from the DEA, corporate pharmacies, wholesalers, and the national opioid settlement agreements. But let’s not pretend that the DEA is the only problem here. What I find particularly interesting is that the American Pharmacists Association and other major pharmacy organizations have actively advocated for easier access to the opioid, Suboxone. They’ve pushed to remove regulatory barriers and expand access because they recognize these restrictions interfere with patient care. Where is that same outrage when chronic pain patients are being turned away from pharmacies with legitimate prescriptions? Where are these pharmacy organizations when patients are forced into withdrawal because they can’t get their medications filled? Why aren’t they lobbying just as aggressively to protect these patients? The Doctor Patient Forum is a small nonprofit that operates solely on donations, yet we’re the only organization we’re aware of actively lobbying Congress for a DEA oversight hearing. How is that even possible? Where are the larger organizations with the funding, resources, and political connections? Why is it falling on a small nonprofit like ours to demand accountability from a federal agency that has had such a significant impact on physicians and their patients?
