Quentin Tarantino devotes a terrific chapter to ROLLING THUNDER in his book CINEMA SPECULATION, detailing how Paul Schrader’s original screenplay was far darker and more disturbing before being significantly softened through rewrites by Heywood Gould.
John Flynn's "Rolling Thunder" (1977) is a movie of two-halves. The first part makes you believe that it is going to be a really great movie about a returning US war veteran from Vietnam. In the second half, it becomes more of a angry white guy loner revenge movie filled only with violence and blood. There was real scope in Paul Schrader's script at the start. As the movie progresses the movie's quality fades away too.
“First Period” as the title of the premiere episode of Mike Flanagan’s CARRIE is diabolically clever.

This epic masterpiece based on Shakespeare’s King Lear, was Kurosawa’s 27th film.
He was 75 years old when he made it.

Suprisingly Kubrick was about Barcelona's biggest booster; he cast Thomas Gibson for "Eyes Wide Shut" directly from it. (As we loved Barry Lyndon & were inspired by its score for Love & Friendship.) @Criterion @bnbuzz

I was just watching clips from The Ghost and The Darkness which in the 90s was considered a second tier late summer adventure movie but now with its gorgeous location shooting, smooth camera work and confident movie star performances feels better than anything released in 2026.

Ellison is steadily eliminating his own optionality.
A month ago he had:
Option A: settle.
Option B: litigate.
Option C: quietly explore relocation.
Option D: threaten relocation and retreat later.
Option E: restructure California footprint without leaving.

I did a fun panel for the @WGAWest a couple weeks back on world building in screenwriting, together with big brains Akela Cooper, Kira Snyder, and the man himself @Dean_Devlin with Robert Wolfe moderating. Watch it here if you're interested: youtube.com/watch?v=mEpQAb-A…
I feel like ZOOROPA is due for a reappraisal. THE JOSHUA TREE may be the more beloved U2 album, but ZOOROPA has aged better and sounds like the world we’re living in right now.
The first half of DEER HUNTER moves at the aimless, mundane rhythm of real life. Then we're dropped into the Vietnam war and the movie’s entire rhythm is violently shattered, just as the characters' lives are. That stark contrast is what makes the second half hit so hard.
Any Oscar chatter must include Rachel McAdams' towering performance in SEND HELP.

CAROLINA CAROLINE is a pulpy, beautifully observed emotional journey, anchored by a phenomenal Samara Weaving. She’s never been better.
Watching THE INVITE got me thinking about other great movies set in San Francisco. My Top 5:
1) VERTIGO
2) WHAT’S UP, DOC?
3) HAROLD AND MAUDE
4) BULLITT
5) TIME AFTER TIME
