I watched around 225 new releases in 2024. That's the most I've ever seen in a year and likely the most I'll watch for the next few decades. I think in 2025 so far I've seen... five? Of all those movies, here are the 20 that I can't stop thinking about. writerandrew.com/index/2025/…

The literacy crisis isn’t that people can’t read the words. It’s that they can’t understand the context, infer meaning, recognise nuance, identify contradictions, or draw logical conclusions from what they’ve read

Periodic reminder: it took Iran 5 days
BREAKING: The U.S. is now preparing to completely abandon Gulf countries, as Trump envoy Tom Barrack directly warns Gulf allies that Washington can no longer guarantee their security indefinitely, telling regional officials in Doha that they must take responsibility for their own defense, signalling the end of the U.S. security umbrella in the Middle East, per the Wall Street Journal. Barrack said the 80-year-old U.S. security-for-oil arrangement is no longer sustainable, pointing to regional defense partnerships as the way forward. The warning comes as Gulf states face Iranian strikes on U.S. military infrastructure and growing uncertainty over Washington’s future military commitment to the region.

David Chase repeatedly did everything he could to make you realize that these characters were wrong and should not be looked up to and every day he must be punching walls

Let me get this straight... OpenAl was founded as a nonprofit. Open source. For everyone. "To benefit humanity." Then he raised billions of dollars. Then he closed the source code. Then he converted to for-profit. Then he scraped the entire internet without asking anyone. Then he used YOUR writing YOUR art YOUR code to train his models. Now he's on stage saying you'll pay HIM to access intelligence. Just like a water meter. He stole all of your data. He built the product with your work. And now he's going to bill you to use it... Corporate greed has reached an all time high, and they're not even hiding it anymore...
Open AI CEO, Sam Altman: “We see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity or water, and people buy it from us on a meter.”

The literacy crisis isn’t just illiteracy. It’s people who can read perfectly fine but have absolutely no interest in reading anything that isn’t a caption, headline, or argument someone else summarized for them.

Linda McMahon on successful uses of AI in classrooms: "The first couple hours every day students really have on headphones, they're in front of their computers, they're getting their subjects fed to them ... the beauty of that is the student almost has a one-on-one tutor ... I have seen it work so well"

chuds really talked themselves out of liking a movie where the last hour is about a straight white male alpha operator doing a mass shooting against the soft-handed elites trying to cuck him

The presidential candidate who built her career on incarceration lost, whereas the mayoral candidate who shows compassion to incarcerated people is historically popular. I wonder if the Democratic Party can learn anything from this.
Zohran Mamdani spoke at a Rikers Island graduation ceremony honoring 57 incarcerated people who earned their high school diplomas. One graduate, Elijah Smith, said he didn’t expect the mayor to show up, but his presence meant something: “It helped. Someone cares about the incarcerated individuals in this jail.” Sometimes dignity starts with simply showing up.

There's no better case for socialism than the world's first trillionaire being a massive loser who cosplays as his mom and baby online and lies about being good at video games in an attempt to give his life meaning.

You don’t miss Blockbuster. You miss living a simple, nonperformative life. You miss eye contact and company. You can bring back Blockbuster now but without the other stuff, you’d still turn off the movie after 20 minutes because you were looking at your phone instead.
If Pizza Hut can return, then we can resurrect Blockbuster. And we should. While Netflix made things more “convenient” we lost something irreplaceable: The ritual of going to a place with your family or friends to choose a story together. That experience was special.

Hey, uh…you guys know that the Odyssey is a story about a guy being punished by celestial being who don’t fucking exist, right? Like it’s not a piece of historical record—it’s about Greek Batman going on an adventure and meeting dead Superman in hell.
