What Americans need right now is to scroll through the flood of social media posts from World Cup visitors.
They are not just coming to our great host cities, like Seattle. They are seeing the places in between. They are getting a glimpse of the real America, not the version filtered through our media, our politics, or our addiction to controversy.
And the reviews are strong:
“This is the America we were promised as kids.”
“Nothing comes close to America.”
“The best thing about this World Cup is experiencing America.”
“These are the kindest, friendliest people I have ever met in my life.”
America is not a political party. It is not a government. It is an idea, and it is a people.
This is the pep talk, and the reality check, we needed as our birthday approaches.
America is amazing. We are amazing. And our best days are ahead.
I can't agree with this more. To me, this is the number 1 reason that sports are great for kids.
When you're not performing well it can feel like the house is on fire.
You can either run away, or you can figure out how to put it out. That's not a sport skill. That's a life skill that baseball can teach.
