I got to see Sense and Sensibility last night. A lot of romantic, slightly melancholy music featuring the violin in a similar way to Dario Marianelli's Jane Eyre. It definitely matches the mood of the film which reminded me of the romantic poets that Marianne loves.
I was sad to hear of the passing of composer George Fenton today. His score of "Ever After" brings a smile to my face every time I hear it. What is one of your favorites?
My orchestra is playing a lot of soundtracks in our first concert of the season next week. It's a lot of fun to play so much John Williams but I never noticed how many variations there are of the bass line between Indiana Jones, Superman, The Imperial March and Summon the Heroes.
The latest episode is up and focused on "The Other Bennet Sister" from BBC/Britbox. This is a delightful mixture of melody and comedy, featuring the viola and a lot of great cello moments as well. #theotherbennetsister

A few musings on the score for "The Odyssey" as well as Dune and Project Hail Mary.

We saw the Odyssey this weekend and it was fantastic. I really like the creative use of ancient instruments and vocals. I will say that the synths threw me a little. It felt very Nolan but combining very ancient and very modern was actually distracting in a few moments.
My husband and I have been watching a lot of mysteries recently and I forgot how good the score is for "The Glass Onion" by @NTJohnson
Not only does the track "String Quartet" remind me of Shostakovich but it is also very effective in the movie.

New episode is up and all about "Little Women" by Thomas Newman. This was my childhood classic. Enjoy a wonderful Newman score!

Another Bridgerton analysis video: Benophie from Season 4
Loved the choir moments in "Project Hail Mary." The rest of the music was very effective and cool but I will admit that I love a beautiful choir. #ProjectHailMary @DANIELPEMBERTON
A little video on Sophie's theme from Bridgerton Season 4. #bridgertons4 #sophiebaek

A new podcast episode is out for "How to Train Your Dragon." All about the romance this time! (I think the most romantic is ironically the dragons)

Hoping to release the last "How to Train Your Dragon" over the next two weeks after I finish playing St. Matthew's Passion by Bach with my orchestra.
I'm leaning towards doing another period drama episode. Any requests?
I have been listening to the soundtrack of Bridgerton Season 4 on repeat. I love the main theme for the couple of this season and as always, the string writing is just fantastic.
I have a new episode up: a conversation with composer Mikel Hurwitz. We talk about his new documentary "Soul of a Nation" focusing on events in Israel as well as Hallmark movies, creative projects, and more. Enjoy!

Everyone was asking how intense my December was for performances and I can honestly say the beginning of January is much more intense. An orchestra concert, accompanying a student recital, teaching 30-something students, a wedding, and my Dad had a small stroke.
Hello 2026!
Really enjoying the season 2 soundtrack of Percy Jackson by @bearmccreary and #sparksandshadows
I've been listening to it on repeat.
Occasionally, I get to speak in person instead of the podcast! I was fortunate enough to speak about Jane Austen Soundtracks (Pride and Prejudice) at the Chicago JASNA Birthday tea this weekend.
