"White Spirit" is a novel about an art student in London in the 1990s. Beyond being a documentation of what happened, it is an examination of the lies I was sold (knowingly and unknowingly) by the system, by my colleagues and by myself.
As you read the book, you'll see all the beautiful traps we set for ourselves, as creators and professionals. I'm sure you'll recognise some of those. The lies you tell yourself are the worst because they are the most convincing and the hardest to escape.
Dissenters (including me) spend a lot of time decrying the state of the system. It is a lot harder to look into yourself and discover that most of your plight is of your own making.

Decrying the synthetic for the real embodied human novel SF fan @WSelf has written an article which rings a bell against our mutual impending enslopification. It's an impassioned defence of the importance of the novel and the pressures it faces in light of "Ai" and LLM's. – at London, England

The Great Gatsby was enjoyed by almost all the people at Wimbledon Book Club who read it but a common view was it was now too famous to be read and enjoyed on its own merits, separate from its reputation as a 'great book'. Wuthering Heights was near universally hated tho.

Sound like a bog standard espionage thriller riding the coat-tails of the James Bond 007 franchise for extra marketing clout. Hard pass. #NotJamesBond007 – at Merton, London
The biggest expansion of the #JamesBond universe in 70 years. A novel that maintains the espionage thrills and enhances the mythos of 007, without featuring the man himself. New cast take some getting used to, but momentum builds heading into the next book... #BondTwitter 🤵🏻

If you've ever wondered why the word Utopia is used as often as a slur as an optimistic exclamation!! then this article by @MrEwanMorrison is what you want to read. Excellent stuff Ewan!
Left wing collectivist Utopias in nature - Right wing libertarian Utopias in space.
The Problem with all Utopias in History is that we can't imagine what a perfect society would be without ignoring human nature & forcing a rigid plan on people.

It was a gloriously funny meeting. Interestingly the only two people (out of 34) who enjoyed it were English Teachers.
Wuthering Heights is the ultimate "I liked it because everyone else likes it" book.
Replying to @WimbledonBookCl
Wuthering Heights was my favourite ever book club meeting. That book got torn to shreds!
Often famous books are found to be absolutely rubbish by modern audiences. I liked The Great Gatsby but it's too famous to be judged on its own merits now.
On the other hand Wuthering Heights is famous & utter drivel of the worst sort. 32/34 book club readers who read it agreed. – at Merton, London
Unpopular opinion time. The Great Gatsby is awful.
It is a turgid novella (it's only 41k words) about awful people, boringly told. It's highly overrated and whenever somebody suggests that it is GREAT LITERTURE hurumph hurumph that tells you you're probably dealing with somebody who doesn't actually read much, but it's got name recognition so you sound clever if you cite it.
It's one of those books that continues to exist because it's mandatory to shove it down high school kid's throats, to then "analyze" for months, until the kid hates books and never reads for the rest of his life. It isn't the worst offender, only because The Scarlet Letter exists, but it is up there for sheer number of teenagers it has taught to hate books.
.@DarrenSearle has written a slick piece of detective fiction disguised as investigative journalism, its a clever trick which scratches the crime fiction / problem solving itch while giving his protagonist greater latitude than a police procedural would normally allow.
