66 Years of Independence
The Editors Behind Nigeria's Independence Day Article on Wikipedia
Every October 1st, Nigerians worldwide celebrate independence. Behind the celebrations, volunteers make sure that history is recorded accurately on Wikipedia.
The "Independence Day (Nigeria)" article is a Featured Article, Wikipedia's highest quality rating, earned only after rigorous peer review. Special shout-out to editor Vanderwaalforces, who wrote 90.3% of it.
When Nigerians write their own history, local narratives are preserved, misinformation is countered, and African perspectives reach a global audience.
Spot a missing detail on a Wikipedia article? Fix it. Have sources on Nigerian history? Cite them. Write your name in the sands of history: edit a Wikipedia article today.

PRESS RELEASE
WikiHeritage Fellowship 2.0 to Document the Untold Stories of Women in Pre-Colonial Lagos
Lagos, Nigeria | September 21, 2026
The WikiHeritage Fellowship returns for its second edition with a focus on Women of Lagos: The Pre-Colonial Era, an eight-week programme dedicated to researching, documenting and improving public access to the histories of women whose contributions to the development of Lagos have received limited recognition.
The fellowship will bring together young history graduates, history enthusiasts and emerging heritage advocates, equipping them with practical skills in historical research, archival documentation, digital storytelling and leadership.
Through collaboration with the Lagos State Records and Archives Bureau (LASRAB), participants will examine historical records and explore the contributions of women to the social, economic, cultural and political development of pre-colonial Lagos. Research will cover notable women, women's associations, entrepreneurship, community development and traditional institutions.
The programme will also provide leadership training through the Young Innovation Leaders Foundation (YIL), preparing fellows to lead community-based heritage preservation initiatives and sustain their contributions beyond the fellowship.
Experienced archivists and Wikimedians will train participants in archival research, digitisation, Wikipedia editing, reliable sourcing and open knowledge practices. Fellows will apply these skills to create and improve Wikipedia articles and, where copyright and institutional permissions allow, make selected historical materials available on Wikimedia Commons.
Fellowship Timeline
The programme will run from September 21 to November 6, 2026, following a preparatory period for applications and participant selection.
* September 21 – October 9: Programme launch, orientation, leadership development, archival training and Wikimedia skills development.
* October 12 – 16: Practical archival research and digitisation at LASRAB.
* October 19 – 30: Wikipedia article creation, content improvement and peer review.
* November 2 – 6: Public showcase, community engagement and fellowship close-out.
The fellowship will conclude with a presentation of participants' research, an award ceremony and the launch of the Archives-to-Wiki Network, which will support continued collaboration and heritage documentation.
By combining historical research with leadership development and open knowledge practices, WikiHeritage Fellowship 2.0 seeks to make the contributions of women in pre-colonial Lagos more accessible while developing a new generation of heritage leaders committed to preserving the state's history.

The fight against disinformation cannot end with a fact-check. It has to become part of the knowledge people can find and trust.
That idea set the tone for Day 1 of the Interactive Media Seminar for Electoral Integrity & Edit-a-thon convened by @WikimediaNG & FCA for @fiap_es..
Wikimedia User Group Nigeria retweeted
Day 1 focused on building the foundations for that work.
🔹@ayokanmioyeyemi, Programs Director, @WikimediaNG, unpacked the Wikimedia Counter-Disinformation Model, exploring how sourcing discipline, transparency and community editing can structurally challenge false information.

If Day 1 was about understanding where disinformation meets the information ecosystem, Day 2 was about building the workflow to do something about it.

We are proud to be part of this!🤝
Leadership isn’t accidental; It is built through intentional learning, mentorship and opportunity.
We’re excited to partner with @WikimediaNG to develop the next generation of leaders through the Wiki LeadershipX Initiative.
The journey begins!
We’re excited to announce our new strategic partnership with KNEWROW Consulting Limited (KCL), one of Nigeria’s leading leadership development and organisational consulting firms. For over two decades, KCL has worked across the public, private, and non-profit sectors, helping to develop and mentor leaders. Their experience makes them a strong partner as we strengthen leadership in the Wikimedia movement in Nigeria and beyond, helping prepare the next generation of community leaders and ensuring a smooth transition as the movement continues to grow and evolve.
Volunteers are the backbone of Wikimedia. Our Strategic Plan prioritises leadership development and capacity building for long-term growth, so we sought a partner who shares our values and has the track record to help us support the next generation of community leaders.
What is Wiki Leadership X?
Wiki Leadership X is a key step in our commitment to Invest in Skills and Leadership Development, a recommendation of the Wikimedia Movement Strategy. It is a six-week virtual leadership development programme, followed by an additional six weeks of peer learning and mentoring, designed to equip emerging Wikimedians with the practical skills, knowledge, and confidence to lead and strengthen their local communities.
Through live virtual sessions, self-paced learning, hands-on assignments, and leadership coaching, participants will gain real-world experience they can apply directly to their community work and careers.
Key Highlights of the Initiative
1. A Pilot Program: Launched jointly by Wikimedia Nigeria and KCL, this first cohort will help us refine the model and explore ways to scale leadership training across the wider movement in the future.
2. Fully Sponsored via CSR: KCL is delivering this program as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. Their $27,000 USD investment fully covers the learning platform, tuition and resources for up to 50 selected fellows, with Wikimedia Nigeria paying 3000 USD for KnewLearn LMS access for 50 participants.
3. High Interest & Global Reach: The fellowship kicks off in August 2026. We received over 200 applications from Wikimedians in Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Madagascar, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Sudan, Brazil, The Gambia, Liberia, France, Tanzania, Benin, and Qatar.
4. The Initiative was launched in Lagos during a press conference to share the importance of the project to the world.
Looking Ahead
We want to extend our thanks to KCL for supporting our volunteers and investing in the movement’s future. By equipping these fellows, we are building stronger, more collaborative communities for the long haul. We look forward to following the progress of our first Wiki Leadership X cohort and sharing their achievements with you soon!

On 3 July 2026, we visited Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation as part of our ongoing stakeholder engagement and advocacy on tackling misinformation and hate speech in the digital space.
During the visit, we held a productive meeting with Dr Suleiman Haruna, the ministry's Director of Public Relations and Protocol. We discussed the growing challenges of information dissemination in Nigeria, the ministry's role in addressing them, and areas where collaboration could make a meaningful impact.
The meeting opened the door to a potential partnership between the two organisations
