We had an inspiring Meet & Greet with James Heilman, Founder of Wiki Project Med, hosted by the Nigerian Wikimedia community. We spent the afternoon exploring how to navigate health-related content on Wikipedia, translate medical topics into local languages using simple tools, and improve public health access across Nigeria through open media. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us in person and online for making the event such a success.

We are delighted to have sponsored four Wikimedians representing Wikimedia Nigeria at the Language Diversity Conference 2026 in Accra, Ghana. Led by our Programs Director, Ayokanmi Oyeyemi, the delegation joined conversations at the intersection of language, culture, technology and open knowledge, bringing the Nigerian Wikimedia community’s experiences and perspectives to the global conversation. The conference provided an important platform to raise our voices, share our experiences, and help shape narratives around the preservation, documentation and representation of Indigenous languages and their role in building a truly inclusive open knowledge ecosystem. For us, language diversity is more than preservation. It is about ensuring that everyone, regardless of the language they speak, can see themselves, their knowledge and their culture represented in the digital world.

66 Years of Independence The Editors Behind Nigeria's Independence Day Article on Wikipedia Every October 1st, Nigerians worldwide celebrate independence. Behind the celebrations, volunteers make sure that history is recorded accurately on Wikipedia. The "Independence Day (Nigeria)" article is a Featured Article, Wikipedia's highest quality rating, earned only after rigorous peer review. Special shout-out to editor Vanderwaalforces, who wrote 90.3% of it. When Nigerians write their own history, local narratives are preserved, misinformation is countered, and African perspectives reach a global audience. Spot a missing detail on a Wikipedia article? Fix it. Have sources on Nigerian history? Cite them. Write your name in the sands of history: edit a Wikipedia article today.
