My first subsatck post. Searching for Black Swans. Thanks to @EpsilonTheory, @tomowenmorgan and @FrederikNeckar for the inspiration. --- I received my initiation into the flaws of capitalism in September of 2000. In July of that year, our Silicon Valley software company went public, raising $60 million on NASDAQ. In August, I turned 30 and experienced my second full burnout. And in September, the market crashed, taking our company’s valuation down with it. In the space of a month, we went from a $400 million market cap to less than 10% of that. This was a profitable company, with blue chip customers, which was suddenly trading for less than half the value of our cash on hand. The market giveth, and the market taketh away.

Hi @paulg, yes. This is spot on. And it’s the root challenge being caused by Silicon Valley rather than being fixed by it. This is arguably the biggest danger on the planet today. Individuals and institutions have a limited capacity for change and when the demand for change (in this case caused by the exponential growth of tech) exceeds that capacity, people suffer. Plus, like a car that is driving too fast for its headlights, the faster things change the less visibility we have into the future and the less we can plan wisely for it. This creates real fear of real dangers, which is why there is so much anger and political polarization right now. Biggest danger today. And being caused by the pace of tech improvement.
There were a lot of things that only worked because there's a limit to the rate at which humans can operate. We're about to find out what all of them are, as they break.

How introspective of you!
But that doesn’t sound like me at all.

I live a mile from this project. There's already an underpass a few hundred feet away. So it's not $114M to create a way for the animals to cross the freeway safely. It's $114M to make their journey a couple minutes shorter.
EXCLUSIVE: Gavin Newsom promised to build a bridge for cougars and butterflies in the middle of Los Angeles. The project has turned into another boondoggle, with broken deadlines and costs exploding to $114 million. This is Newsom's bridge to nowhere. city-journal.org/article/cal…

This is a really solid book! I haven't had the time to fully read it yet, but what I've already read is spot on. Really Well Done, Scott!
My book Conscious Accomplishment - How to Use Personal Achievement For Spiritual Growth is now available! For decades I tried to achieve my way to happiness. When this stopped working, I was forced to turn my focus inward. Pretty quickly, I began to realize that working on my consciousness was a more direct way to improve my life. As illuminating as this was, it also was disorienting and nerve-wracking. Most of the examples in our culture made it seem like you either went hard after success or abandoned all that to live a monastic lifestyle. I wondered if I was being called to leave my worldly ambitions behind if I was serious about my consciousness evolution. Fortunately, I met a wonderful teacher who guided me towards clarity. The call wasn’t to abandon my life as a startup entrepreneur, but to use my existing circumstances for expanding my awareness and transformation. Gradually my company and all aspects of my life became my mirror and teacher. Conscious Accomplishment is the book I wish I had when I started my journey. It teaches you how to use the process of moving towards your goals for the evolution of your consciousness. And as you do this, the ways in which you accomplish things evolves and expands. This integrated path is not only incredibly enlivening and enriching, but also suitable for many people in our society. If you’re interested in learning how to walk this middle path, are conscious-curious, or feel stuck while trying to balance both worlds, this book is for you. If this resonates, you can find a link to the book below👇 And if you’d like to support it reaching others, ❤️and 🔁are much appreciated!

Amazing work Scott
I’m excited to announce the launch of the Consciousness + Spirit Tech job board! As far as I know, this is the first hub showcasing a large number of opportunities at the intersection of consciousness and technology. Currently there’s over 250+ jobs from around 100 companies including startups like @Headspace, @mindvalley, and @mymindbloom. As we discover new companies in the ecosystem that meet the job board’s criteria, we will continue expanding the opportunities on it. This initiative is a collaborative project between @ConsciousTal , Spirit Tech Collective, and Alicia Liu. If you are a fan of this initiative, here’s how you can help: 1. Share some love on this post 🫶 2. Share the job board with friends and companies who might be interested 🙋‍♂️ This will help more people discover the job board and find aligned careers! Link to the job board in the thread below 👇

There are two types of courage, which are diametrically opposed to each other - yet most people were only taught one of the two. When it comes to a real and present danger (Tiger!) we need to develop the courage to conquer which requires controlling your fear. That's the basis of 1000's of years of our stories, myths and cultural training. However, most of our problems today are rooted in change rather than danger. And the courage to change is exactly the opposite of the courage to conquer. It is based in accepting and partnering with fear rather than controlling and conquering it. One of the most important keys to success in modern life is learning how to set goals that inspire and scare you (Yes Yes Hell No!) and then developing the courage to change by Making Friends With Your Fears. The book Yes Yes Hell No codifies best practices for doing so.
I've started to think that courage isn't the absence of fear - it's the willingness to let your life be shaped by what you love rather than what you're afraid of losing.

What are the pathways to developing both high agency and high consciousness? The most common archetype I’ve seen amongst people who can hold both starts out with someone focused on external agency. Usually there’s a pendulum experience where they go all in on the outer world, then all in on their inner world, before eventually finding a balance. Anyone who's been through this can verify that having your world turned upside down (and often shattered) like this can be incredibly challenging. It begs the question, is this required? Is there a way to work on both at the same time that doesn’t require so much suffering? @WhettenBrian is one of the most incisive leaders I’ve met on this topic. I took some time recently summarize some of the main ideas from our recent podcast conversations in a new blog post. YES, you should continue to use all the opportunities life gives you to do your inner work. But there’s also other key distinctions you can focus on that will help you grow yourself, so you can grow your leadership and agency. These distinctions are: - Proving worth vs. creating value - Pushing against “the wall” vs. being pulled through it - Seeking power vs. finding containers I really think Brian is on to something here. Having seen a lot of this play out in my own life, there seems to be an invisible wall that shows up in our lives. The ideas he offers to move the wall on both consciousness and your ability to make shit happen are very original. I look forward to leaning into them in my own path of expanding my consciousness and leadership. You can read more about them here blog.scottbritton.me/p/so-yo…

Amazing conversation on agency and leadership for a lazy Sunday.
There's a small number of people in the world who are both operating with high agency and a high level of consciousness. This is "agentic sage" territory. But how the heck do you get there? And is it possible to embody it without dropping out of life or going through the prolonged suffering that often supports major consciousness expansion? @WhettenBrian has been exploring this question for 25 years by working with some of the most successful entrepreneurs who combine high consciousness with high agency. What he's learned is that there is a way to embody BOTH, that minimizes spiritual bypass and getting stuck. We sat down for one of the richest conversations I've ever had on my podcast. Big ideas: - Understanding "the wall" of things not going well - Power = consciousness + material resources - The proving worth vs. providing value trap - You cannot skip developmental stages (taking, pleasing, achieving, giving, and receiving) - Containers stronger than your weaknesses are non-negotiable - Problems of excess vs. problems of lack require different solutions - How to overcome the "poor but pure" and "rich but soulless" traps If you're curious for how you hold both worlds effectively - this conversation is a banger!

How can successful entrepreneurs and executives integrate consciousness and spirituality while staying grounded and effective? Scott Britton and I had a fantastic conversation exploring this question.

I had a call this week with yet another beautiful, good hearted, intelligent, extremely powerful person whose psyche was completely blown apart by a "sacred plant medicine journey" and has spent the last five years trying to put the pieces back together, with nothing close to adequate support. People - PLEASE BE CAREFUL. Of the dozens of people I've met who have followed this path, 10-20% of them experienced serious, permanent damage from it. 10-20% seem like they were genuinely helped by it. And only one or two have - maybe - turned the experience into a wave of integrated spiritual development. There are a lot of great spiritual paths out there. To be fair, each path has it's own dangers and pitfalls. And lord knows it can be hard to find spiritual teachers you can fully trust. But "plant medicine" seems to have a particularly potent set of risks attached to it. Buyer Beware.

Hi @EpsilonTheory, you're one of the most insightful writers in this space. If we pull apart diagnosis from prescription, how much of @HayekAndKeynes diagnoses in this article do you agree with? What specifically don't you agree with? Before we get to solutions it would be helpful if we could agree on problems.
I think this is wrong for the same reason Pericles thought it was wrong to ‘reset’ the relationship between Athens and the world. “Your empire is now like a tyranny: it may have been wrong to take it; it is certainly dangerous to let it go.” You can’t get there from here without permanently weakening your country and inviting destruction.
