During my most recent shift at the Toronto Holocaust Museum, an 11-year old (the youngest age admitted) approached me during a school trip to ask me to explain Kristallnacht. There's nothing more difficult than trying to explain that level of hate to a child. – at Vaughan, Ontario

It's estimated that about 232,000 children and teens under 18 were among the 1.3 million people deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Most were deported to Auschwitz with their parents. Only about 23,500 were registered in the camp. The rest were sent directly to the gas chambers.

We are starting to learn about the impact of Hamas captivity on the children and it's utterly heartbreaking.
Thomas Hand, father of 9-year-old Emily, says the little girl thought she had been held hostage for a year and now cries herself to sleep.
“The most shocking, disturbing part of meeting her was she was just whispering, you couldn’t hear her. I had to put my ear on her lips. She’d been conditioned not to make any noise.”
“Last night she cried until her face was red and blotchy, she couldn’t stop. She didn’t want any comfort, I guess she’s forgotten how to be comforted. She went under the covers of the bed, the quilt, covered herself up and quietly cried.”

Many people don't understand how much the Holocaust traumatized the Jewish community. 78 years after the end of WWII and the global Jewish population is not yet back to the numbers that existed in 1939. There likely isn't a Jewish person alive who didn't lose family.

Two people today told me that attacks on the Jewish community in the Diaspora is justified because of the Israeli-Hamas war and are not Anti-Semitism. I feel horrible that my 5 and 7 year old grandsons are growing up exposed to hate.

Jews were not the only victims of the Nazis. They viewed Roma as racially inferior and as social outsiders.

This makes me sad. The Jewish Federation of Toronto is holding a webinar for parents in what they should do if their child faces #antisemitism at public school. Even Jewish children have to deal with hate.
