The Babi Yar Massacre, which took place on September 29-30 1941 near Kyiv, stands as one of the largest single massacres of the Holocaust. In a ravine called Babi Yar, Nazi Einsatzgruppen executed over 33,000 Jewish men, women, and children in just two days. Victims were forced to undress and were shot at the edge of the ravine, their bodies falling into mass graves below. Unlike the extermination camps, Babi Yar involved no gas chambers or formal facilities—only efficient systematic murder. This massacre revealed the horrifying speed and brutality with which the Nazis could carry out mass killings even outside the camps. Families were annihilated together, and entire communities were erased almost instantaneously, leaving behind only silence and grief. Babi Yar symbolizes both the vulnerability of Jewish communities in Nazi-occupied territories. It underscores that the Nazi genocide was not only industrialized in camps but also carried out with terrifying immediacy and precision in occupied cities and towns. The ravine remains a solemn reminder of lives lost and the scale of human suffering inflicted by the Nazi regime.

This year Sukkot arrives following the targeted attack on the Sons of Jacob synagogue and the Belleville Jewish community. Sukkot (the Feast of Booths) is a weeklong Jewish festival that celebrates the fall harvest. Against this backdrop, it might feel jarring or even wrong to celebrate with lightness and joy. The sukkah symbolizes the fragile temporary shelters that our ancestors lived in during their 40 years of wandering in the desert after escaping slavery in Egypt. After Belleville, our community may be experiencing a similar feeling of vulnerability and fragility. Students from a Toronto Jewish school went to Belleville to build a community sukkah—embodying the spirit of Sukkot and community.

I am 73. I discovered that men's life expectancy is 76 and for women it's 81. So, I decided that I'm transitioning.
