COVID, Flu & RSV in Colorado update, 10/21/26 Flu continues to rise ahead of schedule, but fortunately the rise remains slow and steady. COVID indicators all change direction and climb. RSV remains rare. And an easy public health action for interested Coloradans.

For anyone getting into biology, please consider taking airborne disease resistance more seriously. It's a super important area of medicine that is a huge cause of death and sickness but easily gets forgotten. We're likely to get many more airborne plagues in the future due to the combination of not just extremely dense and interconnected society (including city and farm animals), but also accidents from bio research and offensive biotech (both from random people and from secret government programs that can easily get themselves exempted from safety restrictions), all enhanced by powerful AI. Right now, this area is getting way less love than longevity research (which continues to be super important!), but it's an area where there are lots of unclaimed wins that we know exactly how to do (but are not yet doing) with present-day tech: * early detection * passive universal testing * filtration/ventilation/UVC * better vaccines (including making them open source and open science) * cryptography to make all of the above privacy-preserving We can have China-level pandemic resistance with Sweden-level limited intrusion into people's lives, and then go even further. We just have to actually do the work for it.

I very much want to be wrong, but I think this outbreak is going to get much, much worse. Attacks on healthcare workers, active conflict zone, porous borders, sub-optimal surveillance. A very bad combination.

This is exactly the scenario that @DrFiliatrault, @TRyanGregory and I warned about in a Scientific American article last summer: scientificamerican.com/artic… We weren’t the only ones. This is such a predictable disaster unfolding in slow motion.
There is something really concerning (and disappointing) going on in the US right now. A dangerous and preventable situation. Let me explain. nextstrain.org/avian-flu/h5n… 1/

My cousin who I haven’t spoken to since around 2021/2022 after she became irate after I shared Covid information with her grandmother, posted that she lost her Mom, son, and uncle in 2020. She lost her step-sister, fiancé and who would have been in MIL in 2021. She lost her best friend, brother, and two of her friends from high school in 2022. (She is in her mid 40s). She lost her aunt, 2 cousins, a friend from work, and her manager in 2023. She lost two dogs that originally belong to one of her cousins that passed on her father’s side after only having them for a few weeks in 2024. The same year, her daughter who is now 11 years old, lost her best friend and her best friend’s Mom died. She also lost both of her remaining aunts. In 2025, her department combined with another department at work because what used to be 8 people was now down to 2. Three people died. Two went out on medical leave and didn’t return, and one went out on disability in December 2024. She stated that most of her weekends in 2026 has been driving her grandmother to funerals..and that her grandmother has outlived all 6 of her children….5 daughters including her mother, (one daughter died in Nov/Dec 2019 from “pneumonia”), and a son. THEN SHE SAID….. “I can’t even imagine Covid being as bad as the SUPER COLDS that they couldn’t shake. Knock on wood, none of us got Covid.” ….and for me…this is why distance is good to maintain sanity,

I really, really dislike the “still masking” framing. It annoys me to no end. I’m not “still wearing a seatbelt”, so why would I be “still masking”? Maskers are generally way *ahead* of the curve, because we discovered what should be viewed as a lifelong mitigation fairly early in the paradigm shift from droplet theory -> airborne. Which is the complete antithesis of “still”, a qualifier that implies masking is a mitigation with a potential end in sight. There isn’t a potential end, at least as far as it being the more scientific and moral choice to use respirators in shared public spaces. It’s the correct science, and it will always be the correct science until the day that we die, and it will continue being the correct science well beyond that point. Unfortunately, I know that there are a lot of people in the COVID conscious community who are still waiting on a miracle prophylactic drug to be able to remove their masks. I don’t think it’s the majority, but I do know there’s a significant amount. To be clear, if their wish ever does come true, those people, many of whom I fear are the ones using the “still masking” framing, will be indistinguishable from everyone else using past-tense “during COVID” in 2026.

Cognitive recovery after COVID isn't complete, and that's the optimistic reading of this study. 92 people with post-COVID, a full neuropsych battery, retested a year later. Memory got better. Processing speed didn't.🧵
Cognitive phenotypes and neuropsychological trajectories in post-COVID-19 syndrome: a 12-month follow-up study 🚨LongC0VID brains: memory often rebounds within a year, but attention and processing speed stay stuck. New 12-month study of 92 patients shows selective recovery, not full return to baseline. The daily life consequences...... 👇😧 ➡️This again interesting Spanish 12-month longitudinal study followed 92 adults with post-COVID19 syndrome (PCS: mean age ~49 years, predominantly women) who had previously undergone comprehensive neuropsychological assessment, ➡️Participants were retested after roughly 1 year using the same battery covering attention/processing speed, memory, executive functions, visuospatial abilities, and language, ➡️Pre–post comparisons (Wilcoxon tests with FDR correction) showed significant gains mainly in verbal memory (learning and recall measures), visual memory, matrix reasoning, inhibitory control, and certain action-processing tasks (fluency and naming), ➡️In contrast, attention and processing-speed measures remained largely unchanged, ➡️Using a domain-based phenotype approach, the proportion of participants classified as having normal cognition increased (from 65.1 % to 77.1 % at the −1 SD cutoff and from 83.1 % to 86.7 % at the stricter cutoff), ➡️Residual impairment was predominantly single-domain and driven by attention/processing speed, ➡️Multi-domain profiles that persisted also frequently involved this domain, ➡️Exploratory analyses linked neither cognitive reserve nor affective symptoms strongly to trajectories, ➡️The sample characteristics note that 51 % reported COVID-19 reinfection and 90 % were vaccinated. The study does not analyse or report any specific effects of reinfection or vaccination status on cognitive trajectories, phenotypes, or recovery rates, ➡️Overall, the data indicate selective, partial cognitive recovery in PCS, with attention and processing speed emerging as the most persistent vulnerabilities. ‼️So, one year later, memory and some higher-level thinking skills improved in people with LongC0VID syndrome, yet attention and processing speed barely recovered, leaving a lasting vulnerability. In everyday terms: trouble focusing and thinking quickly can still make ordinary things harder, staying concentrated while driving in traffic, flying as a pilot, keeping up with a complicated conversation, meeting work deadlines, or using phones and computers without getting overwhelmed. Memory often gets better (so people may forget less), but the stubborn attention problems can leave them slower, more mentally drained, and make it tougher to fully get back to work or social life even when other thinking skills improve. Sound familiar??? #AvoidSars2 #AvoidReinfections nature.com/articles/s41598-0…

Big. On word-reading speed, 68% scored more than 1 standard deviation below the norm at baseline, and 68% a year later. The group average sits about 1.2 SD below the norm, roughly the 12th percentile. That's 2.5 years after infection.

Had no idea how frequent dengue virus infections have become in Florida. Per the CDC, >1000 non-travel-associated dengue cases in US this year, mostly Florida. A guy I ran cross-country with in HS lost a teenage daughter to dengue last year. Can't believe this isn't big news.
