XC is the foundation for a great track season. You can skip XC, your choice, but you’ll never make up the gains you left on the table when you skip the XC season. Is it really your stance to be ‘half’ as good in track? Don’t sit the bench for 1/2 the year. Run XC!

If your 14 YO multi-sport athlete isn’t willing to eat breakfast daily, make his or her own snacks, put their phone down an hour before bed they really don't care about being great. Seriously, if a 14 YO who has a tablet, spends > 4 hours/day social media, is enrolled in specialized training/multiple sports that you spend thousands of dollars on annually should absolutely be able to structure a routine! Summer is coming to a close. It's not the time to goof off. Now is the time to dial in your nutrition, sleep, hydration, and habits. Don’t claim you want to be great, set PRs this fall, and be a starter yet have a work ethic consistent with riding the bench. Some extra tough love from me this morning.. there’s a lot of hard working athletes out there hungry to get better and will easily outperform those who slept in, stayed up late, skipped breakfast, and cared more about social media than they do playing time. You reap what you sow. If you want to be a first string starter your habits should reflect that. Control your controllables.

As an athlete, some of your biggest improvements come after you swallow your pride and start accepting constructive criticism.

Athletes: If you are assigned a run, post-run work, a cross-training day, a weight room session, etc., and you fail to do it, be honest that you're not following your coach's plan. The best athletes do all the assignments. Make sure you're doing the same. Let's Go!

A high school runner told me something beautiful yesterday: “I’ve been eating more for lunch lately and my times are actually improving.” If you wanna compete, you need to eat.

Athletes: When you're ill (cold, flu, etc.) remember the following: - You can't speed up feeling well - your body is on its own timeline. - The more you stress about the illness, the slower you'll get back to 100 percent. - You're not losing fitness. #calmmind

Athletes, here's the deal.... If you want to succeed in high school track running, remember these four things: • Sleep is a secret ingredient to your success • You've got to keep your easy days easy • You simply need to compete to PR • You've got to trust your coach

For most runners, the last 1k of the last race of the year is the most important part of the race. If you're a 20 min 5k runner that's just 4 minutes of discomfort you'll have to endure. If you're a 15 min runner it's just 3 min. Know that it's coming, and then "Compete!"

What's one thing you can do this coming week to become a better runner? Key point: it may not be something new. • Continue to go to bed at a reasonable time • Continue to stay focused in the last 30 percent of race pace workouts • Continue to do all post-run work Let's go!

Show me a program where the varsity runners cheer on the JV runners and the freshman runners, and I'll show you a team that will be at the state meet for years to come. Related... Upperclassman: You have no idea how cool this is for freshmen and sophomores.

Upperclassmen... Take a couple of minutes and think of your first season of XC. What was confusing and what was challenging? Talk to the freshmen and sophomores about your experience. They'll feel cared for, and your program will improve from these conversations. Let's go!

"Fast, Faster, Fastest" is a great mantra for the last part of a race. There are multiple ways to execute it... • It could be 600m/200m/200m for the last 1000m • It could be 500m/300m/100m for the last 800m • A freshman might do 200m/100m/100m Have a plan, then execute it!

Athletes... When your coach asks you to do strides, run them with good posture, and with focus. When they ask you to do post-run strength and mobility, take it seriously...as seriously as you do your running. Do these two things and you'll race fast this fall. Let's Go!

There are 67 days until Sat, Oct 28. There will be no magic workouts in the next 67 days, but you can make a small step towards having a great race each day. - Run hard when you're asked to - Do all the "little" things that aren't as fun as running - Prioritize sleep Let's go!
