The gulls from @Flatholmers always bring us surprises. We got this sighting from a neighbour in Caerphilly. This neighbour is 92 and loves his garden and his new addition. He rally wanted to know where it came from so asked help to his son to please find out.

The first birds have reached the Waddensea and are now in a flock of 5,000 Barnacle Geese from the Russian/Baltic/Dutch populations... It'll be interesting to see what happens next 👀 Will they return to the UK, or is this flyway their new life going forward?
Our wandering Barnacle Geese (originally ringed in North Yorkshire) are touring Germany! First seen close to the Austrian border in January, they are now in Lower Saxony. Heading home? 🤗

It appears quite a number of the Scorton (North Yorkshire) / @RSPBSaltholme Barnacle Goose flock have left for southern Germany! 70 have been sighted very close to the Liechtenstein / Austrian border! That's 1,086km from their ringing location!
Another overseas sighting of a Scorton (North Yorkshire) ringed Barnacle Goose, this time in southern Germany, close to the Swiss border! Fascinating to learn of the movements of the UK's naturalised population (Photo: L Maier)

Our GPS-tagged Northern Lapwings continue to disperse further south and west. "Rukho2", which breeds up north in Oulu, Finland, just flew across the north sea, crossing right through London city centre, at 2.2 km high in altitude! I wonder if it managed to do some sightseeing :)

Wisdom, the world’s oldest known wild bird, recently returned to Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge! The beloved Laysan albatross, or mōlī, is in her 70s now and was first spotted last Friday by a volunteer. USFWS photos: Jon Plissner

Wow look at this flock/dune/beach of sand martins! Cc @WLBirding – at South West, England
Sand Martins on the road in France. They roll around along our lane every year during autumn migration. Is this common behaviour? Why do they do it? It's above 30C, the roads are sticky, are they oiling their wings? Deterring ticks etc? Anyone know!? @ianballam

The young Great Black-backed Gulls are starting to depart. Please keep an eye out for the distinctive combination of rings which signifies a Skokholm bird and try and read the white alphanumeric code. Many will be heading to our south.

Results from @_BTO #Nightjar GPS tagging have revolutionised our understanding of wintering locations and migration routes. A neat track from autumn 2022 showing where they slow down/stop (Blue) to refuel & rapidly cross (Orange) the least hospitable habitats. #Springwatch

To the people accusing naturalist’s of ‘doom mongering’ by reporting a lack of insects, birds, steady rain etc this spring, please understand that we are only telling the truth. None of us want to be see our flora & fauna struggling, but it is, and love compels us to call it out.

Given that we have only ringed 57 birds since we started, having a re sighted bird abroad it’s very encouraging! Moorhens might be moving a lot more than we think, that’s why the #NMP is so important. So if you are a ringer and fancy getting involved please get in touch!
