A familiar Downtown Houston space is starting to feel different! 😍👀🌳
Phase 1 of improvements at Tranquillity Park is complete, marking the first step in refreshing one of Downtown Houston’s most distinctive public spaces. Announced by @houmayor John Whitmire earlier this year, this first phase focused on creating a more welcoming experience while laying the groundwork for what comes next! 🙌
Improvements include: 👇
🪵 New composite decking over three existing fountain basins
💡 New tree lighting throughout the park and its perimeter
🧱 Repairs to pavers and select hardscape areas
👀 Removal of select walls to improve sightlines
✨ Power washing and general cleanup across the park
This process has been intentionally collaborative, bringing together preservationists, historians, engineers, architects, and community partners to honor the park’s original vision while shaping its next chapter. As people continue to use and experience Tranquillity Park, future improvements will evolve based on how the space is received! 👏
Swipe through the before + after to see the progress taking shape. This is Phase 1, and there’s more to come as Tranquillity Park’s next chapter continues to evolve! 👉🤩

Have you experienced the new Texas Avenue yet? 🌿☀️
The first phase of the Cool + Connected Corridors initiative is already making a difference, creating a cooler, brighter, and more comfortable walk through Downtown Houston!
So far, the improvements include:
🌳 13 new trees and landscaping (joining nearly 100 trees planted along the Main Street Promenade, the backbone of the Cool + Connected Corridor network)
☂️ Petal-inspired shade structures at intersections, a site where trees can’t be planted; they provide both shade during the day and light up at night to increase pedestrian safety
🪴 Expanded native landscaping and new planters help absorb heat while bringing elements of the bayou into our pathways
💡 Enhanced lighting for better visibility after dark
The impact is already measurable:
🌡️ Shaded areas are averaging 10°F cooler, with some locations seeing surface temperatures up to 30°F lower
✨ Nighttime illumination is now 2 to 6 times greater, making the corridor more welcoming after sunset
Connecting the Theater District, Main Street Promenade, Daikin Park, hotels, residences, and office towers, these improvements are helping make Downtown easier and more enjoyable to explore on foot. This is just the beginning. More Cool + Connected Corridors are on the way, with Phase Two locations to be announced later this year.

A cooler, brighter, and more comfortable way to move through Downtown Houston! 🌳🚶🙌
Phase One of the Cool + Connected Corridors initiative is now complete along one of the most utilized corridors in Downtown: 15 blocks of Texas Avenue. This initiative is designed to create welcoming, safe, and comfortable routes between destinations in Downtown Houston. This first phase connects the Theater District, Main Street Promenade, and Daikin Park as well as hundreds of hotel rooms, residences, and office towers.
What's a part of this first phase?
☂️ Petal-shaped shade structures, placed where trees can't grow
🪴 13 new trees and landscape planting
💡 New lighting to illuminate more of the corridor after dark
Our early readings are showing the improvements are already making a measurable difference:
🌡️ Surface temperatures under shade structures are an average of 10°F lower—and up to 30°F at most
💡 Nighttime illumination is two to six times greater than under previous conditions
And, this is just the beginning of the Cool + Connected Corridor network! The Texas Avenue improvements build on the recently-debuted Main Street Promenade. Together, these climate-responsive corridors are improving comfort, connectivity, and the experience of moving through Downtown and offer a model that can be scaled across Houston.
Phase Two locations will be announced later this year!
