President Executive Board @UNESCO (2023-2025). Diplomat/ Teaches at Sorbonne & Sciences Po

Paris, France
Joined July 2017
Also a great diplomat.
“Everyone matters, and everyone matters absolutely.” Before becoming a diplomat, Australia’s Ambassador to @UNESCO was a teacher. This #WorldTeachersDay, she reflects on what the classroom taught her: to listen, embrace diversity and make sure every voice is heard. Because great teachers make us feel seen and inspire a lifelong passion for learning. unesco.org/en/days/teachers @AusAmbUNESCO #ForThePeople

As #UNGA gets underway, one question is central to the global conversation on #AI: who gets to shape its future? Together with @ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin, we make the case for AI that people and countries can trust, understand and help shape. Innovation must go hand in hand with human rights, inclusion, skills and meaningful participation. Our joint statement with @ITUSecGen: unes.co/aifuture #ForThePeople

Today, at @UNESCO Headquarters, we commemorated the 7th International Day to Protect Education from Attack with the launch of “The Crossing”, a public installation highlighting the growing number of attacks on schools worldwide. Together with the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to UNESCO and the @EAA_Foundation, we reaffirmed a clear message: education must be protected, including in times of conflict and crisis. #ProtectEducationFromAttack #ForThePeople @QatarAtUNESCO @HinzabH

This week marks six years since the devastating Beirut port blast. The people of Lebanon have shown remarkable resilience on their journey towards recovery and rebuilding. We must continue to pursue truth and justice for all those who survived, and in memory of the lives lost.

Sometimes a picture says more than a long speech. DG- President of GC-Chair EX BR, one table one conversation @UNESCO is strongest when dialogue replaces distance, when consultation replaces assumption, and when cooperation is recognized not as a concession, but as a strength.
Regular dialogue with the leadership of @UNESCO’s Governing Bodies is essential to advancing our shared priorities and strengthening our collective action. Today, I met with the President of the General Conference, Khondker M. Talha, and the Chairperson of the Executive Board, Nasser Bin Hamad Al Hinzab, to discuss #UNESCO80 and the launch tomorrow of the Open-Ended Working Group on its Pillar 2. We exchanged views on how UNESCO can further enhance its impact, relevance, and effectiveness in a rapidly changing world. #ForThePeople

It was a great pleasure to award the five exceptional women scientists at the 28th L’Oréal–UNESCO For Women in Science Awards Ceremony at @UNESCO, together with Jean-Paul Agon, Chairman of @LOrealGroupe and President of the @FondationLOreal. Professor Liesl Zühlke, Professor Felice Jacka, Professor Sarah A. Teichmann, Professor Raquel Lia Chan and Professor Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic are advancing science in fields that touch lives everywhere — from child heart health and mental health to genomics, food security and regenerative medicine. Over nearly three decades, the L’Oréal–UNESCO For Women in Science programme has supported more than 5,000 women researchers from over 100 countries, and honoured 137 international laureates from 45 countries - seven of whom have gone on to receive the @NobelPrize. This is more than a record of achievement. It is proof that when women scientists are given the recognition, support and visibility they deserve, science advances — and humanity benefits. To our 2026 Laureates: congratulations. Your work advances knowledge, improves lives and reminds us what science can achieve when all talents are given their full place. #ForWomenInScience #WomenInScience #ForThePeople

At today’s inaugural International Day of Small Island Developing States, I underscored a simple truth: SIDS must be central to our shared priorities. Contributing less than 1% of global emissions, they face some of the most severe climate impacts. @UNESCO is committed to working hand in hand with SIDS to strengthen knowledge, build capacities, and foster resilience across societies and ecosystems. #ForThePeople
