Education should be equitable, accessible and inclusive for every girl. Few would disagree. Yet millions of girls are still denied their right to learn – even though educating girls transforms lives, strengthens communities and helps build more prosperous and peaceful societies.
The 2026 laureates, @projectsoar in Morocco and Girls with Opportunities by @CAREenPeru, remind us that progress is possible, barriers can be broken and opportunities can be created.
Inequalities are not inevitable. They are the result of choices. Let us keep choosing to invest in girls' education, protect their rights and ensure that every girl can learn, thrive and fulfil her potential. #DayOfTheGirl
It was a great pleasure to welcome H.E. Mr Gytis Marcinkevičius, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Delegate of Lithuania to UNESCO, on 5 October 2026. @GMarcinkevicius @LithuaniaUNESCO

I wish him the very best as he takes up this new position at @UNESCO.
Today is World Teachers' Day. On this very special day, I congratulate every teacher for their invaluable contribution to humanity. Teachers play a key role in unlocking every learner's potential.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the 1966 ILO/@UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, a landmark instrument that continues to guide efforts to strengthen the teaching profession worldwide.
On #WorldTeachersDay, let us reaffirm our commitment to this Recommendation – and to empowering teachers to shape more inclusive, equitable and resilient education systems for all.
Our regular coordination meeting with the Chair of the UNESCO Executive Board, Dr Nasser Bin Hamad Al Hinzab, and the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Khaled El-Enany Ezz, took place on 30 September. @HinzabH @UNESCO_DG
We congratulated the Director-General on the successful visit of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV to @UNESCO on 25 September. We further discussed ways to continue to work closely together in order to sustain the momentum generated and raise UNESCO’s visibility worldwide.
Diplomatic postings always have an end date – but friendships do not. On 28 September, we gathered to bid farewell to H.E. Mr Ali Abdulla Juma Alhaj Al Ali, the Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the United Arab Emirates to UNESCO.

Since taking up his position at UNESCO, Ambassador Ali has created a lasting legacy – which includes his work with H.E. @SMiculescu, my predecessor as President of the General Conference, to partner with Sharjah to digitize UNESCO’s archives.
The United Arab Emirates was also elected to the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage & inscribed Wadi Wurayah, in the emirate of Fujairah, on the #UNESCO World Heritage List.
My warmest wishes for his every success in the future.
I had the honour of receiving H.E. Mr Hazreen Abdul Haleem, Ambassador & Permanent Delegate of Malaysia to UNESCO, on 28 September, for his farewell call. Since taking up his role at @UNESCO, he has achieved many successes, including Malaysia’s election to the Executive Board.
He also spearheaded efforts leading to the designation of Lenggong & Sarawak Delta Global Geoparks, the inscription of ‘Forest Research Institute Malaysia Forest Park Selangor’ World Heritage site, and the designation of Kinabatangan Biosphere Reserve.
