50 years ago today, The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 came into force.
The Act transformed the workplace in Great Britain.
Resulting in far fewer people killed, injured, or made ill by work activity.

It's sad that nearly 20 years after the risk of falls from vans was highlighted at the launch of the Work at Height regs, industry still don't want to lead the change. #timeforchange

VEPS is a very simple idea, developed to answer the need to bring the LCV sector up to compliant standards. Our granted patent covers both the twin platform system, and a lighter (cheaper) single platform variant, amongst others. It's the progress the sector should WANT to take.

Patent renewal done for another year. Let's hope the project can be passed on to the right organisation soon - either to launch or to form useful 'Prior art' for other developments. Remember, with Patent box and other incentives, R&D costs are tax favourable, So it's a win win!

Patent renewed for another year. Still available to the savvy business looking to secure commercial IP either to launch direct, or as important 'prior art'

Received this image of a man in need of VEPS in Edinburgh today. Remember, in the colder, wetter months the slip risk on top of vans is far greater, alongside all the usual trip hazards. Do send us any you see. And lets see 2024 as the year VEPS comes to market!

Ladder racks are a great solution to avoiding work at height. But what if it's not only ladders you carry? Ironically, none of the serious accidents (including fatalities) I've researched have involved securing ladders. Soffits, gutters, timber, roller shutters, but no ladders.

Nowhere else in the construction sector is a fall from height just accepted as 'normal', at least, not on sites where there is a basic awareness of the need for compliance. It's time for change. Falls from height kill and seriously injure. Avoiding the risk IS possible.

VEPS IP also covers the lighter weight, lower cost development of a single platform, all erected in seconds from the safety of the ground. The IP and full project are still available to the right partner organization, just drop me a line for details

A few years ago we tested to see if VEPS could be fully erected from the safety of the ground in under 10 seconds (with no more exposure to live traffic than leaving the vehicle). It took 8.9 seconds. The single platform design will slash that. facebook.com/VehicleEdgeProt…

This summary really kick started the VEPS project, along with the death of Stehphen Huntley who died in a similar fall. The risks they both faced are still commonplace, yet simple to address. 10 years on, why hasn't industry embraced change?

The emotional impact goes beyond just the injured person and their family, as shown by this statement by someone who witnessed the aftermath of a fatal fall. No-one should experience this.
Packed room for our meeting on enhanced reporting, Andrew Delahunt from @IPAForg speaks about the emotional impact of falls from height and how to make the reporting easier to navigate.

Rear door access ladders do NOT provide access to a safe place of work, and introduce / facilitate a higher risk of falls from roof racks. Manufacturers AND SUPPLIERS of these items, and of roof racks, have duties under Section 6 to highlight and address these risks.
