Erase Protestant & Dissenter from Irish republican history and you erase its very foundations. From 1798 onwards, their role was vital. In Curious Journey (1974) Máire Comerford of Cumann na mBan and David Neligan, Michael Collins’s ‘Spy in the Castle’, salute their contribution.

Around four years ago, I was discussing the war in Ukraine with an Irish journalist on a balcony in Berlin. I told him that the West miscalculated and that NATO countries could not, in the long run, resolve the contradictions that this confrontation would unleash. Cracks would soon begin to emerge, and that, surely, was part of the calculus. He seemed aghast. He repeated that mantra — apparently mandatory for Western journalists — that Putin hoped for his “full-scale invasion” to succeed in three days, that NATO had now dramatically expanded its border with Russia, and that the West was more united than ever. I told him that we should speak again in a few years. We never did, but I wonder what he would say now. It is breathtaking how deeply Europe has transformed since then. The loss of affordable energy, now exacerbated by the NATO-backed US-Zionist war in Iran, is decimating its industrial base. In Palestine, Europe supported a colonial genocide to the hilt, destroying its political standing on the world stage. With two pillars of its hegemony in tatters, Europe’s final recourse is militarization. It has launched a rearmament drive comparable in scale to that which preceded the First World War, it is actively toying with the apocalyptic danger of nuclear war, it is decimating the social democratic compact to pay for the transition to a war economy, and it is deploying extreme violence against its citizens to secure these policies. European capital is on the back foot, and the objective conditions for fascism’s return to the political center are in place. It is clearer than ever that this crisis is only going to deepen, producing irreparable fractures in the edifice of Western power.
Ceux qui ont cherché à faire tomber la République auront à en répondre.

I have heard no one, in any party or other organization say that a white paper and a citizens Assembly is all we need. The necessary work will take years. That is why we need to start. I suggest how we might do it in my new book Before the Vote. dcupress.dcu.ie/book/before-…

Delighted to launch @JohnDoyleDCU’s new book ‘Before the Vote: Planning for a United Ireland’ at the Political Studies Association of Ireland conf at University College Cork. The book is not so much an argument for unity as the need to plan for its possibility/probability #PSAI26

Perhaps it's time for some uncomfortable questions for Unionism? Governed NI for 50+ years with virtually absolute political power and coverage. What exactly did you build? Decades of discrimination, inequality and political division, and now the South is outperforming NI on living standards, life expectancy and, most importantly, education. Still, with unionist politicians obsessing over flags, parades and constitutional grievances, ordinary people are left dealing with the consequences of decades of poor governance and serious underinvestment. Jeysus, you had half a century to build an NI that worked for everyone. Instead, one could argue, you built one that didn't even work equally for its own citizens. Perhaps instead of being offended by the term “failed state”, unionism should start asking why, after all those decades of power, so many people are still being failed. And here's the question, what positive vision are you offering beyond another generation of grievance and division?
"Unionists are affronted when Northern Ireland is called a ‘failed state’ but the figures speak for themselves. From living standards to infant mortality, the population is being failed when compared to their counterparts in the south." John Manley reflects on new comparative analysis which shows people in the Republic are better off in terms of living standards, life expectancy and educational outcomes. Reassuring unionism seems to have become a labour of love for nationalists. Understand its fears, respect its traditions, protect its identity. Where is the same consideration for us? I support peace, but reconciliation has to work both ways. See my piece below!

Over the past 7/8 or so years a few of us have commemorated the anniversary of the death of William Orr. No football shirts, no flags just a few of us down to Templepatrick to remember a young life lost at the hands of the British Government.

Things D4 columnists are unlikely to write about today: "The programme also revealed that the leader of the Mid-Ulster UVF, a state run paramilitary gang, Billy Wright had been provided information by the RUC to target Catholics and that he was a state agent. "
Mid-Ulster UVF gang member Laurence Maguire has this morning pleaded guilty to conspiracy to murder all male members of the Cairns family in 1992, the year before the murders of brothers Rory and Gerard Cairns, whose anniversary occurs later this month. Maguire had admitted his role in the plot to the BBC's Mandy McAuley in a Spotlight Special, broadcast last in 2019. The programme also revealed that the leader of the Mid-Ulster UVF, a state run paramilitary gang, Billy Wright had been provided information by the RUC to target Catholics and that he was a state agent. Initially the PSNI did not proactively pursue this matter, despite the admissions. It is only because of the determination of the Cairns family, their legal team at Madden & Finucane Solicitors and support from Relatives For Justice that litigation was brought against the state, forcing it to act. Despite significant delays in the justice process, Maguire has pleaded guilty after a number of preliminary hearings. In the context of today's Commons debate on legacy legislation where investigations and justice are being shut down, and families are being told prosecutions are unattainable, this is an example of a family never giving up and forcing the justice system to work in favour of families and not perpetrators. Families should not be forced into this invidious position, but is a tribute to the tenacity of the indefatigable Cairns family.

Club Brugge have just beaten Inter Milan 4-3 away from home. Since 2004: 8 Belgian titles yet 10 Champions League appearances Regular European knockout progress Celtic have lost 8/10 qualifiers for CL and zero knock out European tie wins in that time. What's our excuse?

14th October 1797 - The Martyrdom of William Orr Born near Antrim town in 1766, William Orr was a Presbyterian farmer and member of the Society of United Irishmen. Having served in the Antrim Volunteers, he joined the Society around 1794 and contributed to its newspaper, the Northern Star. In September 1796, Orr was arrested and imprisoned in Carrickfergus, accused of administering the United Irishmen's oath to a soldier. Under the Insurrection Act, administering such an oath had been made a capital offence. His trial the following September became notorious. The jury returned a guilty verdict with a recommendation for mercy, but several jurors subsequently claimed that they had been intoxicated during the proceedings. Others reported threats intended to secure their agreement to the verdict. Orr maintained his innocence and refused to confess to save his life. Despite widespread appeals for clemency, the authorities were determined to make an example of him. On 14th October 1797, he was hanged at the Three Sisters on the shore outside Carrickfergus. He left a wife, Isabella, and five children. He was buried in the family plot at Templepatrick. Before his execution, Orr affirmed his sympathy for persecuted Catholics and his commitment to unity between people of every religious persuasion. His Presbyterian faith stood alongside his devotion to Ireland and his opposition to religious oppression. Widely regarded as judicial murder, his execution intensified popular anger against British rule in Ireland. The authorities had intended his death as a warning, but instead his name became a rallying cry for the United Irishmen during the Rising of 1798. Remember Orr! 🇮🇪

You’ve got it completely arseways to be totally upfront with you. What the world sees is an Orange Order, an organisation steeped in anti-Catholic sectarianism, still demanding the right to march through a Catholic community against residents’ wishes. Ita really that simple An organisation that excludes Catholics, with a history of parades marred by the celebration of loyalist paramilitary displays, now being presented as the poor oppressed victim. You couldn’t make this stuff up. And the sheer brass neck of unionists lecturing anyone about tolerance, given their own disgraceful history of discrimination against Catholics, is breathtaking. The real problem isn’t whether a united Ireland could accommodate unionists. It’s whether people like you can ever accept Catholics as equals. You’re not being oppressed. You’re being told NO. And clearly, after generations of getting your own way, you still can’t bloody handle it.

Had a great afternoon yesterday (Sunday, Oct.11th) @bnhingham meeting readers and talking lots about Ireland, all while signing copies of my book,"Reflections of an Irish Grandson" ! It's fascinating to me that whenever I'm invited to present my book, I'll be met with people who want very much to tell their own story of great-grandparents, of grandparents or of some tie to Ireland. Affection for that beautiful place lives in many hearts. Folks who stopped to chat yesterday included a young man from Donegal; a middle-aged couple who'd visited Ireland this past Summer; a 5th-grade student who'd traveled around much of the Irish countryside with his Dad a year ago; a student from a local university planning to study abroad in Ireland next academic year; a young woman with growing interest in uncovering her own Irish family history. Signed copies of my book are on the shelves @bnhingham or ask at your favorite bookshop.
