NHS Lothian is still promoting so-called natural delivery & home birth on their (poorly written) maternity services website nhs.uk/pregnancy/labour-and-… & treat death of the baby as a casual incident

"recurrent and systemic weaknesses in the management of high-risk pregnancy, foetal surveillance, maternity triage, escalation and organisational learning". This captures exactly the situation at NHS Lothian (Edinburgh) in 2013 when my little girl was stillborn at 41 weeks.
A mum from Canterbury whose baby died during pregnancy has said the number of stillbirths occurring under the watch of East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust "has to stop". More here: bbc.in/4xSYrXt

Extensive coverage of staffing shortages in Maternity in Scotland in today's The Scotsman. Whatever effec #Letby's conviction had on retention and recruitment can only be worse after Thirlwall's Recommendations @CPMorris1234 @MartynPitman – at Ballachulish, Scotland

I feel the momentum here and hope these words are turned into action and bring about the system-wide changes we need in maternity services. Where is Scotland in all of this?
.@YvetteCooperMP chaired the National Maternity and Neonatal Taskforce for the first time last week. We set up the Taskforce to oversee the improvements which are needed in the NHS. We're working together to make sure every family gets the safe and consistent care they deserve.

Why does the Ministry of Justice believe stillborn babies are less deserving? #NoBreathRequired #Stillbirth #Justice

Agree 100%. Our daughter’s PM uncovered asymmetric foetal growth restriction. All the signs were there. No one joined the dots. Investigations claimed nothing could have been done to change the outcome. So our baby was always going to die? No. She died because of substandard care
A stillbirth can involve serious concerns about care. But families can be left without any route to independent coronial scrutiny. That is the gap. Same harm. Same justice. #NoBreathRequired #Stillbirth #Justice

There have been 100 avoidable perinatal deaths since @andyburnham became PM. Avoidable, not total. I get why people are focused on Sheffield. But at the same time, there has been very very little public or political fury over the deaths of these 100 babies.

When Julie Keegan and Angus McLean took their unwell newborn son to a Glasgow hospital, they were told he "just needed a good feed". One hour after those assurances were made, he was dead. More from ITV News Scotland Reporter @LouiseScottITV on failings in the maternity system as figures show a mother and baby die in Glasgow hospitals every week due to 'adverse events'. itv.com/news/2026-09-02/they…

This kind of conference shouldn’t exist. It’s bias. There should be an international conference on Maternal and Foetal Health
This is a reminder that the international Normal labour and birth research conference is in Berlin this year, and the abstract submission is OPEN - but only until February 21st! The abstract link is below nlbc-berlin-2026.de/call-for…

I have read this piece with disbelief and deep sadness. It presents a version of maternity safety history that is extraordinarily difficult to reconcile with the evidence from successive independent investigations. The claim that “normal birth at any cost” was an “offhand comment” from the Morecambe Bay Investigation is simply wrong. The Morecambe Bay inquiry examined this issue extensively. It found a maternity unit where an “over-zealous pursuit of the natural childbirth approach led at times to inappropriate and unsafe care.” It documented failures of risk assessment, delayed escalation, reluctance to involve obstetricians and what the investigation described as “incorrect and damaging practices.” This was not a glib remark. It was a central finding of an independent investigation into the avoidable deaths and serious harm suffered by mothers and babies. Nor was Morecambe Bay an isolated case. Subsequent independent maternity investigations have identified strikingly similar themes. Most recently, the Nottingham investigation has described cases where significant concerns should have prompted intervention, yet “the quest for normal birth continued.” Against that evidence, I find the quotation attributed here to Professor Soo Downe particularly troubling. She suggests that “a few highly influential individuals” persuaded politicians, journalists and lawyers that babies were dying because midwives were pursuing an ideology. I assume I am one of those individuals. My son Joshua died at Furness General Hospital in 2008. I spent years campaigning for a proper independent investigation into what happened to him and other babies. It was that independent investigation - not me - that reached these clear and well-evidenced conclusions. Other independent investigations have subsequently identified similar problems. To suggest that a handful of “influential voices” somehow created this narrative and persuaded politicians, journalists and others to believe it turns reality on its head. It is particularly troubling when bereaved families who fought for these failures to be properly investigated are portrayed in this way. Families did not create the evidence. Our babies and loved ones are part of it. This is not an argument against midwives or physiological birth. Nor does it deny legitimate concerns about intervention, staffing, resources or inequalities. Those are important issues that deserve serious and thoughtful debate. But simplistic and misleading narratives like this are deeply harmful. They risk dismissing hard-learned lessons from repeated tragedies and discrediting the families who fought to ensure those lessons were heard. We will not make maternity care safer by rewriting history or replacing complex problems with overly simplistic narratives. Childbirth without medical intervention can be a wonderful outcome. But it must never become a target pursued at the expense of mothers and babies who develop complications and need timely medical care.

King’s College London experts have responded to findings from Baroness Amos’ interim report into maternity care. Dr Rebecca Whybrow and Professor Jane Sandall CBE shared insights on the inquiry into NHS maternity services in England.

Remember this article? The high standard of maternity care achieved here could help shape maternity services across the U.K.

Following our own experience with the sneaky SNP government and their NHS stooges, I held England as an example of how to conduct reviews into maternity care with some excellent work done in Morecambe Bay and more recently by Donna Ockenden. Now I'm not so sure 😢
Families in tears reading @ValerieAmos @MatNeoInv report yesterday. Completely minimised the extent of the harm. Left feeling we’ve been used & played in a @DHSCgovuk move to prevent a public inquiry. Ironically Amos did not listen to women. #AmosReview #NMNI #Maternity

Bill Kirkup tells the BBC that criticism of “normal birth” being pushed by maternity services was removed from Amos report just 8 days before publication. This is unbelievable. Kirkup says Amos was listening to the “wrong voices” on this issue. He told the BBC that "a significant number of people" had signed off a version of the report that included criticism of normal birth but that eight days before its publication, "it disappeared." Given the evidence, Kirkup felt he had to resign. "We ought to acknowledge that this is a problem, and that it's got patient safety implications for mothers and babies," he said. "I think it needs daylight shining on it and then we can have a proper conversation about why this sometimes happens and how we make sure that it doesn't keep on happening." Kirkup said he wouldn't discuss how the changes had occurred but that "I think she [Baroness Amos] has listened to the wrong voices on this particular issue."
NEW: Criticism of ‘normal birth’ was removed from the final Amos report just 8 days before publication. Dr Bill Kirkup says the review had found evidence that the approach was a problem in some areas but that the criticism then “disappeared” bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3ey…
