Making news and making history. 🗞️🍎
Governor Healey has appointed Stephen Zrike as Secretary of Education. Zrike is the first Latino to hold the position and will be one of three Latinos leading education agencies in Massachusetts!
ALT Graphic from MassLive Opinion titled “A Historic Trifecta for Latino Leadership in Massachusetts Education.” The image shows Stephen Zrike speaking at a podium outdoors, wearing a red academic robe and holding a microphone. Overlaid text quotes: “For the first time in Massachusetts history, the state is witnessing a leadership trifecta in education: Latino leadership at the highest levels of K-12 with Commissioner Pedro Martinez, higher education with Commissioner Noe Ortega, alongside the historic decision by the Healey-Driscoll administration to appoint the Commonwealth’s first Latino Secretary of Education, Stephen Zrike. Representation alone is not the goal – but it is a powerful signal of progress, possibility, and institutional readiness to meet the needs of a changing student population.”

When President Trump cut off SNAP benefits for more than 1 million of our neighbors, the people of Massachusetts stepped up.
We worked with all 13 Massachusetts United Ways to stand up the United Response Fund and raise $7 million to fight hunger in our state.

It’s November 1, and 42 million Americans are wondering how they’ll feed their families without their SNAP benefits. Organizations like The Salem Pantry are stepping up to help folks bridge the gap.
That’s why I provided $8 million to Massachusetts food banks this month. It’s also why we worked with the United Way to raise more than $2.5 million in one week, money that’s already being distributed to food banks and community partners across the state.
But the heart and soul of these organizations are the hardworking staff and volunteers. For the families they serve, they’re a lifeline — and @MassLtGov and I couldn’t be more grateful for everything they do.

Yesterday we joined the @MassGovernor Administration, EOHLC & @masscdcs to award $13.2M in Community Investment Tax Credits (CITC) to 54 CDCs. Over the past 12 years, United Way has raised $29.7 million for housing & economic development through the CITC.

I’m keeping @MassTreasury and the Goldberg family in my thoughts today as we celebrate the life and legacy of Carol Goldberg. Carol was a trailblazer in business and a force for good in every part of life. May her memory be a blessing.

Last week, Treasurer Goldberg hosted a policy briefing with @midascollab and @UnitedWayMABay highlighting Baby Bonds and Matched Savings as ways to advance economic opportunity. These policy initiatives can narrow the racial wealth gap and give children a foundation for success.
