True reclamation means returning authority to communities, co-writing with knowledge holders rather than enclosing knowledge in academic towers.
See you in 2027 for the 8th edition! 📍

🎶 On Its Knees, but Still Songing.
Dr Eoin Ó Cuinneagáin reflects on the rapid erasure of Irish Gaelic, from 4 million speakers down to 72,000. Yet, colonised peoples hold onto their songs and music to preserve ecological and spiritual knowledge against institutional erasure.

"Tír gan teanga, tír gan anam - A nation without a language is a nation without a soul."
Dr Eoin Ó Cuinneagáin highlights linguistic poverty at #IESS2026: true impoverishment is not just monetary, but the inability to speak your language, describe your world, and connect with your ancestors.

"Ubuntu is not merely an ethic of reconciliation, it is a transformative philosophy of justice." -Dr Lerato Kobe.
She further states that true restorative justice requires addressing historical dispossession, restoring indigenous land and sovereignty, and rebuilding Black dignity and humanity...
#IESS2026 #IndigenousKnowledge #Unisarandi
Dr Lerato Kobe examines Ubuntu and Pan-Africanism through Julius Nyerere’s concept of Ujamaa.
Re-asserting African values means rejecting systems that exploit human beings and building a post-colonial society rooted in human dignity, family, and collective well-being.

Dr Tonny Matjila opens the morning with Day 2 reflections as we prepare for today’s keynote address.
Day 2 shifted the seminar from what indigenous knowledge is to who controls it, who benefits from it and on whose terms it is recognised. The sessions, from floral epistemology and the panel on epistemic justice to ecological governance, health care and Prof Ndlovu-Gatsheni's keynote, showed that epistemic justice means moving from consultation to community ownership, widening benefit-sharing beyond money, and resisting the urge to force indigenous knowledge into Western standards of validation.

Knowledge must be valued for its capacity to sustain, nourish, and heal life.
Prof Sabelo Ndlovu-Gatsheni says Research must be accountable to communities. Communities should participate in defining research questions, and produced knowledge must return to benefit the source.
#IESS2026 #Unisarandi
The existing knowledge architecture was built for a single tenant... Renovating individual rooms will not transform this house, Prof Sabelo J. Ndlovu-Gatsheni.
He further states that we must move from mere inclusion to building a new architecture of knowledge in which many worlds fit!
#IESS2026 #Unisarandi
In Indigenous epistemologies, what we know is never separated from how we should live with what we know.
Prof Sabelo J. Ndlovu-Gatsheni highlights how African knowledge lives through diverse archives proverbs, song, dance, craft, oral traditions, and the body itself!
