“Policy is the signal that tells capital and innovation where to go.” - Ms Kiren Maharaj, Chairperson of the South African National Energy Association (SANEA).
As the country moves from energy crisis management to implementation, policy certainty, investment in infrastructure, affordable electricity and local manufacturing are critical to building a sustainable and inclusive energy ecosystem.
The purpose behind today’s ICES-SANEA energy symposium is to collectively work towards an energy future that is secure, affordable, sustainable and creates meaningful opportunities for South Africa’s people, particularly its youth.

“Scientists often conduct research without fully considering the policies that inform, fund and ultimately determine how that research is implemented. Yet, policy plays a critical role in making funding available, sustaining research initiatives and translating scientific discoveries into meaningful societal impact.
As we reflect on South Africa's energy challenges and opportunities, we must ask ourselves: How can we ensure that our research responds to national priorities, strengthens our competitiveness and delivers tangible benefits to society?
Our responsibility as Unisa’s Institute for Catalysis and Energy Solutions (ICES) extends beyond producing knowledge. We must translate that knowledge into technologies, industries and solutions that contribute to South Africa's energy transition and improve the quality of life of our people.” - Prof Peter Makgwane, ICES–SANEA Energy Symposium, UNISA Science Campus.

In her welcome and opening remarks, Unisa’s Prof Linda Linganiso emphasised the importance of bridging scientific research, energy innovation and evidence-based policymaking to advance a sustainable and socially just energy future for South Africa.
She further highlighted the College of Science, Engineering and Technology’s (CSET) commitment to sustainability, from waste-to-energy solutions to hydrogen pathways, while underscoring the importance of aligning research and innovation with national policy frameworks and energy strategies.
“Let this symposium symbolise the bridge between science and society, between vision and implementation, and between South Africa’s energy challenges and its opportunities for transformation,” she said.
