ALT "Last week marked seven years of Auckland Council’s Local Alcohol Policy (LAP) being dragged through the courts in the appeals process. That means Auckland has gone 2557 days without the opportunity to protect their communities from serious alcohol harm. Communities don’t want more alcohol outlets in their neighborhood. They don’t want new bottle stores located near schools and other special places. So in 2012 the Government handed power to local councils to develop policies on where alcohol outlets can be located, how many new outlets are allowed (if any), what hours they can open and close, and what conditions they need to operate under (e.g. no shop-front advertising). Community preferences were to play a substantial role in these policies."

ALT Pink and white stripy border, with yellow background and blue text. the text reads "Who's dragging out this process and stopping communities having their say? Our two largest supermarket chains are challenging the Auckland LAP all the way to the Supreme Court. We know that alcohol sales bring in more revenue to the supermarkets than any other category."

ALT Pink and white stripy border, with yellow background and blue text. the text reads "What can you do? Put people ahead of profit. Green MP Chlöe Swarbrick has a Private Members’ Bill currently waiting to be drawn from the ballot so that it can be debated in Parliament. The Bill seeks to amend our liquor laws so that this special appeals process is removed, allowing communities to have greater say on alcohol sales in their neighborhood. The Bill may also proceed to be debated if it has the support of 61 non-executive members (MPs that are not Ministers) of Parliament, across any party. If you want to support the amendment, you can write a letter to your local MP and ask them to support the Bill. We can support you in this, let us know if you’d like some support!"
