4) You can still send the AI design PCB to a fab to manufacture it without spending much time on the review part but you would be waiting weeks of build time and $$ on each iteration since you cannot immediately evaluate the output like software

5) simulation can narrow this gap but current EDA simulation tools are not very good at system level simulation/validation and most focus on EM or analog simulation (SPICE).

6) To bridge the simulation gap, component manufactures should begin providing simulation models for their components (e.g. BMS, MUX, Gate drivers, etc). without these models, engineers have to model each component themselves which would br slow and error prone

Here's my take on using AI to design/implement your PCB: 1) Unlike software where you can skip reading the code and run the tests and do manual QA immediately, you cannot blindly send a PCB to the fab without rigorous design review and vetting component selection, layout review

3) AI would be still useful for human feedback loop, i.e. help with component search/vetting, design review (even though the feedback may point to needless changes), documentation.

2) if you are spending hours trying to review a PCB and catching errors and fixing them, you might as well, do the design manually and think through every step of the design

Everybody is using AI and sharing their RTL modules with Anthropic, OpenAI, or Alibaba; in my case, for confidential information such as code or personal finances, I use local AI models. In this article, I share with you my local AI inference setup for FPGA development. Check it out! controlpaths.com/2026/09/27/…
