Government spending on education as a share of GDP • Gasto gubernamental en educación como porcentaje del PIB.
Wealthy countries tend to cluster together, with Denmark, Belgium, and Britain spending between 5.9% and 6.4% of GDP. Among major developing economies, South Africa and Brazil now match or surpass several wealthy European peers, even as their education systems continue to struggle with inequality and uneven results.
Among the 10 lowest-spending countries, Indonesia ranks highest, spending just 1.3% of GDP on education—one of the lowest rates recorded anywhere. Japan’s 3.3% figure is also notable.

According to Shea Vance from The Chronicle of Higher Education, a new working paper reports that 29% of Ph.D. dissertations in science, technology, engineering, and math filed between January and May 2026 contain AI-generated writing.
That’s a big jump from 2023, when just 1.7 percent of dissertations included AI-generated material. The study found that students at lower-tier institutions and non-native English speakers, disproportionately, delegate tasks to AI at the stage of research where they consolidate understanding.
The study found that AI use in Ph.D. dissertations has rapidly grown since ChatGPT became widely available in Fall 2022. The authors’ analysis of dissertations (using the AI detection tool Pangram, which boasts a strikingly low error rate) found that just 1.7 percent of dissertations included AI-generated material in 2023. That rate rose to 5.5 percent in 2024, 18.8 percent in 2025, and reached 29.4 percent in dissertations published through May 2026.

THE PARADOX OF THE GREAT DIGITAL MEMORY IN THE FACE OF THE MOST UNMEMORY CULTURE.
Dr. Arantxa Serantes of Humanista Digital is interviewing me for my new book, Buscando a Ítaca (Searching for Ithaca).
"We find ourselves facing one of the greatest paradoxes of contemporary civilization: we have never had so much access to the recorded memory of humanity, and, at the same time, we run the risk of being the most forgetful culture in history."
"I have always defended that the university is not a simple container or a mere repository of academic content: it is, above all, a dialectical conversation, a shared inquiry into the truth and its consequences. A living community of people who come together to think together, doubt together, and transform reality."
"Access to culture and knowledge cannot be a class privilege nor a corporate competitive advantage or of more or less advanced countries; It is a fundamental human right. If the digital humanities do not serve to bridge inequality gaps, decentralize knowledge, and give a voice to those forgotten in history, they will have failed in their essential mission."
"The new generations have a historical responsibility: to be the true humanists of the code. I hope that they do not allow technology to absorb the letters until they are stripped of their soul, nor do they allow the letters to isolate themselves in an ivory tower, ignoring the language of their time."

Muchas gracias.
