Government spending on education as a share of GDP • Gasto gubernamental en educación como porcentaje del PIB. Wealthy countries tend to cluster together, with Denmark, Belgium, and Britain spending between 5.9% and 6.4% of GDP. Among major developing economies, South Africa and Brazil now match or surpass several wealthy European peers, even as their education systems continue to struggle with inequality and uneven results. Among the 10 lowest-spending countries, Indonesia ranks highest, spending just 1.3% of GDP on education—one of the lowest rates recorded anywhere. Japan’s 3.3% figure is also notable. Source credits: 2026-2025 • UNESCO, Virtual Capitalist and ourworldindata.org/grapher/e…

According to Shea Vance from The Chronicle of Higher Education, a new working paper reports that 29% of Ph.D. dissertations in science, technology, engineering, and math filed between January and May 2026 contain AI-generated writing. That’s a big jump from 2023, when just 1.7 percent of dissertations included AI-generated material. The study found that students at lower-tier institutions and non-native English speakers, disproportionately, delegate tasks to AI at the stage of research where they consolidate understanding. The study found that AI use in Ph.D. dissertations has rapidly grown since ChatGPT became widely available in Fall 2022. The authors’ analysis of dissertations (using the AI detection tool Pangram, which boasts a strikingly low error rate) found that just 1.7 percent of dissertations included AI-generated material in 2023. That rate rose to 5.5 percent in 2024, 18.8 percent in 2025, and reached 29.4 percent in dissertations published through May 2026.

THE PARADOX OF THE GREAT DIGITAL MEMORY IN THE FACE OF THE MOST UNMEMORY CULTURE. Dr. Arantxa Serantes of Humanista Digital is interviewing me for my new book, Buscando a Ítaca (Searching for Ithaca). "We find ourselves facing one of the greatest paradoxes of contemporary civilization: we have never had so much access to the recorded memory of humanity, and, at the same time, we run the risk of being the most forgetful culture in history." "I have always defended that the university is not a simple container or a mere repository of academic content: it is, above all, a dialectical conversation, a shared inquiry into the truth and its consequences. A living community of people who come together to think together, doubt together, and transform reality." "Access to culture and knowledge cannot be a class privilege nor a corporate competitive advantage or of more or less advanced countries; It is a fundamental human right. If the digital humanities do not serve to bridge inequality gaps, decentralize knowledge, and give a voice to those forgotten in history, they will have failed in their essential mission." "The new generations have a historical responsibility: to be the true humanists of the code. I hope that they do not allow technology to absorb the letters until they are stripped of their soul, nor do they allow the letters to isolate themselves in an ivory tower, ignoring the language of their time." El Papa León XIV en la UNESCO To be human is to be free, but freedom is only beautiful when it is oriented to the good and the truth. It is disfigured when it becomes violent and driven by a thirst for power. Therefore, the most terrible of all human works is war, because there science is put at the service of killing.

Muchas gracias. 🚨 Are universities still relevant in the age of AI? Will they continue to provide economic value to students and society in the coming years? Can they SURVIVE AI disruption? Over the past few years, we have watched AI models become as capable as or more capable than humans in most cognitively valuable fields, and many young people today are deeply uncertain about the skills and career paths least likely to be undermined by AI advancements. We have also seen AI enter schools and universities as students use it for homework, projects, and as a learning assistant, while teachers struggle to adapt their materials and teaching methods to this emerging ‘co-learning’ environment. Many watch these developments and declare that universities are dead and that pursuing a degree is a useless or futile endeavor. Maybe not, if they evolve and reshape their mission. In his new paper, “The University after AI,” @profjasonpotts offers a fascinating analysis of the role, function, and value of universities, explaining in detail how AI is disrupting them and putting them at risk of becoming irrelevant in the post-AI age. When describing universities, he writes: “A university is a self-governing micro-republic, corporate in form, approximately 1000 years old (older than nation states, younger than religion), that exists within but always apart from society (for instance they often have their own police and justice tribunals), and which serves as the custodian of knowledge, creator of new knowledge, and whose primary business is to upload that knowledge into a select group of the next generation. This is a service that students want and that society is willing to pay for.” He also states: “A university, then, is neither a cloister nor a factory but a platform, or a multi-sided market whose primary economic function is to reduce the transaction costs of matching distinct groups who wish to trade with one another.” In light of the threat posed by AI, the author offers the following ten proposals to restructure the role, function, and value of universities: - Institutionally separate certification from instruction - Restore the costly signal - Rebuild the missing junior loop - Fast-response accreditation - Sell the cohort - Host scholars rather than employ them - Move to the new frontier - Shed sides - Make the claim on graduate outcomes explicit - Governance as the production technology of the warrant The paper offers a fantastic economic analysis of AI’s impact on this 1,000-year-old institution, informs broader discussions on AI ethics, policy, and regulation, and makes for a great weekend read. 👉 You can find the paper and my follow-up recommendations below. 👉 To receive all my paper recommendations, classes, and essays on AI, join my newsletter's 100,500+ subscribers below.
